'MISSING WHITE WOMAN SYNDROME': Don Lemon, Joy Reid criticize Gabby Petito story over race
Joy Reid argued that the Petito case an example of "missing white woman syndrome."
During Monday night's broadcasting of popular CNN and MSNBC shows, hosts Joy Reid and Don Lemon argued that the case of Gabby Petito, and the subsequent national attention the case has garnered, is evidence of widespread racism in the United States.
During The Reidout with Joy Reid, she argued that the Petito case is an example of "missing white woman syndrome," a term reportedly coined by the late PBS host Gwen Ifill.
Petito, who has been missing since late August after going on a cross country van trip with her fiancé, is presumed dead after remains were found in the Bridger-Teton National Forest that were "consistent with" the description of missing 22-year-old Petito.
"Now it goes without saying that no family should ever have to endure that kind of pain, and the Petito family certainly deserve answers and justice," said Reid. "But the way this story has captivated the nation has many wondering, why not the same media attention when people of color go missing?"
"Well, the answer actually has a name, missing white woman syndrome, the term coined by the late and great Gwen Eiffel, to describe the media and public fascination with missing white women like Laci Peterson or Natalee Holloway, all ignoring cases involving missing people of color," Reid continued.
Reid, talking with guests on her show Derrica Wilson, co founder and CEO of the Black and Missing Foundation, and Lynette gray bull, founder of Not Our Native Daughters, pointed to the case of Daniel Robinson, who went missing in Arizona after last being seen leaving his job site in June, as an example of what she's talking about.

maybe it’s because we don’t have the stop-snitching mindset that prevents us from assisting in the finding and capture of a MURDER suspect!
where the alt-mindset is who cares until it’s one of their own that gets whacked... then it’s drivebys
Don likes to sexually assault men with his fingers.
They need to ask their media people. Dims own the MSM.
Maybe it’s because with missing white women and those searching for them, the focus is on search and recover, search and recover, and time is of the essence.
Unlike missing women of a certain color(black, ALWAYS black), emphasis is on loot, march and burn. Then march and demand. Then loot and burn some more. There is only so much money in the budget to pay for rebuilding burn out cities and vandalized Louis Vitton and Nike outlets.
I don’t know why certain cases suck up all the bandwidth.
It’s just an inconsequential local story, sort of like some crackhead in Minnesota or wherever the Floyd guy was from, who decides to throw down with the cops and loses. But then it gets all blown up.
Gabby was young and absolutely adorable. Her murderer is/was a sick, creepy SOB with guilty enabling parents. Hollywood is scrambling to cast this MOW as soon as possible - they’re just waiting for the final act to be complete.
Shame they have no power or ability to change this.
Robinson went missing out in the middle of the desert. There was nothing around but the dig. There was nothing around his wrecked jeep to indicate where he went. There were searches but still nothing. It has been on the internet and youtubers are checking out his disappearance.
Gabby’s case has twists and turns and the internet basically solved the mystery. Robinson wasn’t a cute petite young woman and he didn’t have an internet presence with dozens of pictures of him and his activities. None of that has anything to do with Joy’s perceived race blame.
Bkmk
Why don't YOU go missing for a long time? See if anyone even notices. They probably won't.
Ooooh, caught the tail end of Jerry Springer just now. No, I don’t watch it. He had a fairly long In Memory Of Gabby ending with several pictures of the WHITE woman. That’ll really tick of racist Joy.
“But the way this story has captivated the nation has many wondering, why not the same media attention when people of color go missing?”
Perhaps Joy could ask her bosses at MSNBC this question and get back to us with their answer. She’s there, after all.
What in the heck happened to the title of this thread???
Where is all the coverage of the black-on-black crime?
It’s YOUR NETWORK that is ignoring it, CNN...
Well, ya pig, find a missing black girl story and hype it. No one is stopping you. But it’s probably real work, something you are averse to.
Hmmm. If only Ms. Reid had a show of her own. Then she could spend every day talking about all the missing-women-of-color stories that other shows are ignoring. If only...
Aw, Behaving Like Monkeys.
I think the observation is valid. Media airs whatever attracts the most viewership, and thus ad revenue. There might be a world where masses of people don’t find missing young, beautiful, cute, sweet-looking, blue-eyed blond white girls more compelling than individuals with other characteristics. We don’t live in one. Is that just or fair to the others? Nope. Get over it.
when a statue is erected of her please let us know.
Needs more Hannah Nightengale.
