We received mail address to our address addressed to someone who never lived here. After doing some checking and finding it was not a neighbor we opened the envelope. Inside was a bank debit card along with information about an account that had been opened. We contacted the bank. They indicated there is a lot of fraud going on.
They closed the account and suggested that we contact the credit bureaus and the state unemployment office and our local police department.
In each case the organization we contacted indicated that it is an ongoing problem.
Please be careful if you receive any unusual bank statements. Also check your credit scores for any unusual activity.

I don't even have the ringer on my landline anymore because all I get on it are robo calls. I never bothered to activate the voicemail with Spectrum, because of that. I have an iPhone and use Verizon Wireless. I recently downloaded Verizon's call filter, and it silences and blocks the majority of the bad calls that come in. It's a big improvement.
That’s all LifeLock does, and they charge you $30 a month.

Similar to the credit reporting scams
I signed up for the 1 week free trial with my debit card.
Impossible to cancel (number was buried in small print on their web site that you have to log in the access)
Cancelled it, so I thought.
Next month. 2 charges for $39.90
Blocked all ACH transactions from them
Got billed with second associated company.
Blocked that as well.
Then a 3rd and a 4th.
Blocked that as well
Was fine for 18 months. (Seems an ACH block is only good for 18 months). Then last month, these charges appeared again. 2 for $39.90 triggering about $114 in bounced check fees - although I turned my card off to accept transactions if my balance is too low. Doesn’t work with ACH transactions I was told by Chase.
They refunded the $114 after arguing with the CS agent.
Complained to the BBB. They claimed it was easy to cancel. The several hundred other complainants had similar stories. They must have someone just employed to respond to BBB complaints
Two motives have been mentioned:
Loot the mailbox before the homeowner gets to it, or
vote fraud - the person “established” residency to vote fraudulently.
Looks like quite the thread. Thanks for the insights from an insider. Every cult and false faith is an admixture of truths along falsehoods, from fundamental to frivolous, and while Scientology is not even close to mimicking the saving gospel of Christ, yet confession to others is a valid Scriptural principal Which of course $cientology uses to take advantage of souls who do not want the risen Lord Jesus (some of whom are ignorant), and thus swallow a perverse and poor substitute. And the negative experiences of Scientology (which used to be even worse) can be used by the author of it to turn souls off from the true proven gospel. May God peradventure grant them . “repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.” (2 Timothy 2:25)
NY State Unemployment is a weird setup.
In 2001 Hubby’s job relocated us from NY to CA. Because of relocation I was getting unemployment from NY. Within a few weeks I got a job in CA so called NY to tell them to stop sending checks. I asked how I could return the money I’d already received after I was hired.
The rep was gobsmacked. She said nobody had ever done that before, and they didn’t even have a procedure for stopping payments or receiving returns. (I didn’t believe her; assumed she was just lazy.) She said that since I was so honest I should just keep the money.
So as checks came in I stacked them up. At the end, I sent them back, Certified Mail, and don’t know what happened after that.
I’m convinced this and many other bureaucracies simply do not care about fraud, equity or fairness - as long as it doesn’t become a PR or political issue. Their job is to distribute government money. Paper money has no meaning for government bureaucrats. Its why the nation is $30 Trillion in debt, and rising fast

That’s a really good idea. I’ve heard of con artists taking your banking/mortgage paperwork out of mailboxes, and doing something to “steal” your home — put it in their names, etc. It’s terrible. Of course, there’s always been a problem with theft of SS checks, IRS returns, etc. — most of which, I think, is done electronically now.
Two of the videos are about a half hour to 45 minutes long and in both cases while he was talking to them, he was able to access their computers and delete all their files.......LOL!
We had a situation a few years back where our snail mail addy was being used for insurance fraud. To the tune of five figures. We called the cops, the insurance companies (more than one was being defrauded).
We couldn’t believe how hard WE had to work to get LE and the bloody insurance companies to give a damn.
We were told our addy was likely used by a local perp who was in on it and because we didn’t have a locking mail box.
We got one. Industrial strength.
Haven’t had a problem since.
Also, word may have gotten around not to use us as patsies.
Ditto for the USPS, BTW.
The USPS was even less interested than the other two.
Gee. They work so hard to do evil. If they’d channel that energy into actually GETTING A JOB ... wouldn’t that be nice?

We made sure to put up a locking mailbox shortly after we moved into our place (semi-rural, mostly 1-5 acre lots and unpaved streets). As for mail addressed to other people, including former residents, it goes into the trash. They’ve had over a year to take care of address changes.
