Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell will not consent to reconvening the Senate on Friday under emergency authorities, delaying the start of President Trump's likely impeachment trial until Jan. 19 at the earliest, McConnell's team confirmed to Axios.
Why it matters: If the House votes to impeach Trump for incitement of the Capitol riot on Wednesday, as is expected, the trial will likely not take place until after President-elect Joe Biden takes office on Jan. 20.

If I recall correctly, the rules of the Senate governing impeachments and trials call for the trial to begin at 1 pm the day following the Senate’s reception of the impeachment from the House.
If the Senate reconvenes on Jan. 19, and the House managers deliver the impeachment shortly thereafter on the same say, the trial could not begin until 1 pm, Jan. 20, an hour after President Trump becomes a private citizen again.
I’m sure they’ll still try. They’ll do anything they can to torture Trump once he’s out of office, just as they did while he was in office. Much of it will be blatantly unconstitutional and illogical. But since when do they care about the constitution or logic?

Schumer is NOT majority leader and WILL not be until Harris is sworn in as VP on Jan 20. Until then, Pence is the tie-breaking vote.

It was simply to have President Trump be the first president to be impeached twice. That’s it. Kabuki theater but with the intent of maligning his name in the history books. I believe they plan to do ‘wonders’ to the man’s name unfortunately.
Pence is the tie breaking vote. The Rs still control the Senate.
Part of me thinks that once Biden is sworn in, it all goes away as part of a gesture towards “Unity”.

Correct. The House doesn’t need or want a conviction. The House needs the drama.

By now “Impeachment” is a badge of honor.

I’ve been saying that here’s something to look for down the road.
Pretty much everyone who worked for Trump will right a book, of course, the only books that will get published, will be those that only say bad things about Trump, the kind of things that would even make his base desert him, if they were true.
Just know it’s coming.
