Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell will not consent to reconvening the Senate on Friday under emergency authorities, delaying the start of President Trump's likely impeachment trial until Jan. 19 at the earliest, McConnell's team confirmed to Axios.
Why it matters: If the House votes to impeach Trump for incitement of the Capitol riot on Wednesday, as is expected, the trial will likely not take place until after President-elect Joe Biden takes office on Jan. 20.

Conviction of the impeachment is moot.
Then, McConnell is not Majority Leader.....Schumer is Majority Leader and the Democrats can convict Trump.
You cannot convict on a simple majority.

According to Dershowitz, Senate cannot convict to remove a former President. The Senate can only vote to bar from future office if there is a conviction to remove from office.
Senate cannot vote to bar a private citizen from running for office.
Gives lie to the “private voices” saying he will give imprimatur to impeachment...
In other words, the Senate will NOT act at all after receiving the “papers” on the 19th because the impeachment rules say nothing can happen before 1 o’clock on the 20th and Biden will have been sworn in by that time and any trial becomes moot. McConnell has explained this several times.
And Schumer isn’t majority leader until Harris becomes Vice President to break the tie which is now broken the other way by Pence.
When the democrat senate convenes,Trump is a private citizen so this is all kabuki theatre

Yesterday Axios, and other media, were claiming that Mitch was chomping at the bit to impeach President Trump.
Oh well, yesterday’s lies just... disappear.
If Dems and their media want the Senate to conduct a fruitless trial instead of working for Biden’s masters’ goals- good!

Since the absurd SCOTUS wouldn’t expedite review of Trump election cases, turnabout is fair.
But that doesn’t mean that any of us should support Mitch ever again.
