reliability is the most important attribute of an SSD: when an SSD fails, it’s like the filament burning out on a light bulb and there’s no chance of data recovery ... the most common failure mode is bugs in the SSD microcode, which is an enormously complex piece of operating system code. Samsung has the best SSD microcode in the business, and are a major factor why Samsung SSDs are the most reliable, regardless of form factor. Samsung is absolutely the only way to go with SSDs. I’ve installed hundreds of ‘em and never had a problem.

Newer HP laptops are a pain to get into. It’s a clamshell design that you literally have to pry apart. A regular screwdriver is a bad idea. I’ve got one of those iFixit toolkits with a set of fiberglass prying tools for just that sort of thing. Still a PITA to take one apart to access memory an drives.

Agree wrt Samsung SSDs. I’ve also had good results with Sandisk.

Exactly, I’ve been using Samsung SSD’s for several years now in my systems with zero problems. I use their ‘Data migration” program that easily clones the source drive to the target drive. Always remember to disable the password on Win 10 systems before cloning.

I can understand wanting to have your entire drive to be SSD, but really, that is a bit of a waste of money, as the bigger SSD drives tend to be fairly expensive.

You're better off getting a 250-500GB SSD for your boot partitions, and using a standard drive for your data, because it's not your individual files and such that are really slowing you down. If you want, splurge on a 10K RPM drive for your data. You'll still get more bang for your buck.

Would also recommend booting into Linux and using VMWare or something similar for Winblows if you can.

My desktop has a 128gb SSD boot drive, and a 4TB hard disk.

You're right. The fastest I've found are 7200. Another problem is my reading comprehension for the original post wasn't as good as one would hope, in that I totally missed the part about it being a laptop the poster was referring to. My comments were really aimed at desktops, since most laptops I've seen don't have space for 2 drives.

Don’t go smaller than a 512gb. If you play any games, or back up any IPODs, you will fill up smaller drives quickly.

nice tips ... i’ve been using Acronis for at least a decade, but last few years it’s been buggy as shit ...

Yup, I thought it was just HP though (I usually buy Asus). I've opened it up twice.. once to replace the SSD, which I learned AFTER I bought a replacement that it was an M2 (tint card SSD), and not the "normal" sized SSD (which is now an external 2TB).
Also upped the RAM from 8G to 32G..

Yeah, mine only has space for 1 M2 (tiny card SSD). Everything is compact anymore :/

I also ran Linux 24/7 and Winblows on VBox on my 4th monitor while I was in Japan. Sadly, now that I am back in the states, I only have this laptop on no external monitors, until I get back on my feet (probably several years down the road.. especially with the stupid kung-flu blocking everything).

This laptop came with an SSD already.. BUT, it is too small (128g). I DO have 1 external 2TB HDD and 1 2TB SSD connected; but I really hate the undersized internal 128g >.<

Yup.. that’s the one I was looking at (970 NVMe)... but, according to some of the 1 stars, it overheats and has a shorter than expected lifespan. I would put heatsink on it if there were room, but it’s a laptop, so there is no extra room :/

Yeah, that is the one I have been looking at.. but was concerned because of some of the negative comments.

Your (and FreedomPoster’s) recommendation keep the Samsung on the top of my list though. I will probably end up purchasing this one by the end of January.
Any issues with overheating?
