Ready, Aim, Buy! Colt Selling Civilian AR-15 Rifles Again

What caused the company to change its mind?

Colt Manufacturing Company has begun to sell its popular AR-15 modern sporting rifle to civilians again. In June, the company did a complete 180-degree turn after it had exited the civilian market for modern sporting rifles last September.

At that time, the company announced via a statement from its president and CEO Dennis Veilleux, “the market for modern sporting rifles has experienced significant excess manufacturing capacity. Given this level of manufacturing capacity, we believe there is adequate supply for modern sporting rifles for the foreseeable future.”

However, Colt Manufacturing, which was founded by Samuel Colt in 1855 and remains the consumer-facing brand, also reaffirmed at the time that Colt Defense would be committed to the production for the military and law enforcement market.

“Our warfighters and law enforcement personnel continue to demand Colt rifles and we are fortunate enough to have been awarded significant military and law enforcement contracts,” Veilleux added. “Currently, these high-volume contracts are absorbing all of Colt’s manufacturing capacity for rifles. Colt’s commitment to the consumer markets, however, is unwavering.”

Colt’s sudden exit from the market last year came as firearms sales had slumped, while the AR-15—which Colt didn’t actually design but bought the rights to produce from Armalite in the 1960s—had been in the spotlight after several high profile mass shootings. Even as Colt had set the standard for excellence, it had also become a highly competitive market with plenty of options for consumers.

Yeah, as soon as I posted I started wondering if that was a 9. The point still holds though. Yet I am a big fan of pistol caliber carbines. For the typical non-shooter a 9mm carbine and 9mm pistol is a great combination for self defense and survival. Only one caliber of ammo to stock up on. Personally though, I’m a 30 caliber man - 308, 30-06, 300 win mag and 338 Lapua are my choice rifles. But I do have a 357 Marlin lever action to pair with the 357 Ruger Gp-100. Just in case. Uhhhh, I mean I did have those until the tragic boating accident.

My mistake was I didn’t bother reloading 5.56 because it was cheaper to buy off the shelf. I reloaded 308 and 300 win mag exclusively and have plenty of that in stock. I’ve still got a few thousand 5.56 rounds but I’ve corrected my mistake. I bought a Lee 5.56 die a couple of months ago and I’ve been spending Saturday mornings making up for lost time.

If you zoom in, you’ll see the mag well says 9mm.

Even so, an AR15 in any caliber is an AR15. Unless it is a mithell or other junk gun from the past.

“Even so, an AR15 in any caliber is an AR15.”

except an AR-15 In 308 is an AR-10. My favorite semi-auto rifle. Although a few friends have told me if I shoot 308 with a Scar 17 I will never go back.

What is the deal with green tips? I bought a few hundred and shot them and I don’t see any real difference from ball ammo. Now black tips are a different story - those suckers will go through an engine block.

Yep!

The time to buy was last year. The late bloomers are SOL at this point.

Unless of course you wish to use an unpopular platform.

I scored 1,000 rds of 5.56mm just three days ago. Try online vendors & gunbroker.com.

At 48 cents a round it’s pricey but not unavailable.

Being a Resident in the State of Connecticut I couldn’t by a Colt made AR-15 if I wanted to.

The weapons that your allowed to by here have to be designed such that there value as a defensive weapon would be very much worthless.

Since Colt didn’t fight to stop the Connecticut Assault weapons ban I wouldn’t by a Colt weapon of the State allowed them to be sold again.

With violent things occurring today Connecticut is going to leave its law abiding Residents Defenseless.

Those are Colt 9mm SMG mags, not .22LR. Originally made for DOE NNSA/OST 40 years ago. Still in production. Good mags.

“After years of being gun salesman of the year, Obama is bumped off his throne by the coronavirus. “

I have a feeling we’re going to see something worse before the election. You have to keep the public scared.
