Budget math -- converting trillions of dollars to amounts people understand
vanity | February 25, 2020 | me

I think that when the media report that Sanders plans new spending of $60 trillion over 10 years, the eyes of many people will glaze over. What's a trillion? A trillion is one thousand billion, and the population of the United States is about 1/3 of a billion. Therefore, every trillion of annual spending amounts to $3000 of spending per American. So extra annual spending of $6 trillion that Sanders has proposed amounts to $18,000 of spending per American. Do Americans think a family of 4 can afford $72,000 more in taxes a year? Even if you wrongly assume that the super-rich will pay for 50% of the new spending, how many families of 4 can afford to pay $36,000 more a year in taxes? The Federal government will spend about $4.6 trillion in 2020 and is raising "only" about $3.6 trillion in taxes. So Sanders proposes spending increases that are almost twice what the government collects in taxes.

If we express Sanders' new spending in everyday language, I hope we can convince most Americans that he is a loon.

Never mind that the more government hands out free money, more illegals will come across the border to get their share. It’s a bottomless pit of spending, with American citizens getting screwed in favor of illegals, as usual.

Good post, assuming you did the math right, not Biden style ;-)

This is the kind of vanity that adds value to FR.

It is interesting that none of the Democratic candidates used your approach—which means they are not very good communicators.

Communication is not just talking or writing—it is saying things in a way that is easy to understand/visualize.

President Trump is and former President Reagan was a master of it.

Hopefully the Democrats will stay stupid...

Politicians and too many Americans are mathematical morons. They just ignore all of the zeros as if they mean nothing.

No disagreement, but this would be more effective after Comrade Bernie gets the Demoncrat nomination. People are more likely to respond favorably when they are presented with actual choices, i.e. The Bern vs. The Donald.

Soooo juts the 1 trillion plus we’re doing now is ok?

Yes, sander’s budget makes it MUCH WORSE.

Let’s not pretend it will START to make the debt bad.

It already is.

Either The Buck Stops Here or it doesn’t.

Don’t matter who is president.

I LOVE what Trump is doing.

Hoping after he has no more elections to win, he rocks the debt.

A little more perspective: Christ was born 1,061,359,848 minutes ago (if my math is correct).

Excellent post. I was thinking this exact thing this morning, and I agree with your numbers.

When people hear “trillion” they don’t appreciate how that affects them personally.

To restate this rule of thumb:

A $1 TRILLION government program costs every American man, woman and child $3,000 personality

Thus a health care program that costs $50 TRILLION over 10 years, is $5 TRILLION per year, will cost a family of four $60,000 per year

I've always found the following example to be a pretty good illustration of the magnitude of difference:

If you spent a dollar every second...

A million dollars would last you 12 days.

A billion dollars would last you 31 years.

A trillion dollars, at a dollar a second, would last over 31,000 years.

About 65 billion seconds have elapsed since the time of Christ, not even close to a trillion seconds. A trillion seconds ago (give or take) Neanderthals were in the final ages of their extinction.

This will not end well.

If we did indeed ‘live forever’-—as all of us once hoped—we’d have to witness and live through the reckoning. Won’t be pretty.
