I just discovered "The Court Of The Crimson King" by King Crimson and it's a darn good song.

Posted on 01/25/2020 2:59:22 PM PST by SamAdams76

I think I played this song at least 10 times today.

I discovered this because I am building a playlist of songs that were popular a half century ago. I intend to carry this through for the rest of my life. The playlist is called "50 Years".

I was born in 1962 so I only started remembering music around the year 1970 but back then, it was Partridge Family, Archies, that type of stuff, because I was only 7 years old, you know.

But this song by King Crimson is EPIC. Turns out that the late Greg Lake did vocals. It's a 10+ minute masterpiece. Said to be the first real "prog-rock" album.

Here it is in all it's glory

Anyhow, it's great to discover music a half century after it came out. The album art is ugly but I'll post a lion down below, which is pretty cool.

Have you heard anything by Yes ? If you like King Crimson, you might enjoy them as well.

Bill Bruford went to KC, from Yes.

" Other than Robert Fripp (the only constant among all the KC albums), it was a completely different album."

In that regard, Beat is somewhat significant in the King Crimson catalog - it was the first album to use the same lineup as the previous album. And Beat was King Crimson's tenth album!

I don’t think Zappa ever forgave David Bowie for stealing Adrian Belew from him.

Yup — there are hidden benefits in discovering good stuff after-the-fact!

I missed out on several TV series first time around, only to discover them later. Like ‘Taxi’. Missed the first season of that first time around.

The only problem with that song was Hendrix. Guy couldn’t sing. He was a great guitar player but overplayed to the point of becoming unlistenable.

Jimi Hendrix sux

Prog rock was cute for a while but it didn’t take long for people to get sick of it a basic song with a 10 minute instrumental between the second and third verses, technically brilliant and unbelievably pretentious. The kiss of death was probably delivered by Rick Wakeman in his King Arthur concept. Even he admits now that the music got to be over the top. Listening to it every 50 years is a good idea.

Greg Lake had an incredible voice. That song is classic.

RIP Greg Lake.

The title track to “Trilogy” is my favorite.

“21st Century Schizoid Man”
Oh absolutely! My fav King Crimson song, even if it does dive off the deep end into some chaotic jazz!

Here’s a nice live version of the great studio song, from the album “The Condensed 21st Century Guide To King Crimson: 1969-2003 [Disc 1].”

And the lead singer has enough hair for everyone on the back row, and then some!

One must always include this song in a playlist:

Jethro Tull - Aqualung

Speaking of Journey, I never knew that was Schon playing lead on Santana’s “Everybody’s Everything.” He was only 17!

If you say so. But not all was lost. Bands like the Ramones came about because people got sick of thinking you had to graduate from Julliard in order to be in a rock band.

Have you seen/heard Rachel Flowers? She’s a big ELP fan, and plays it all by ear, cuz she is blind!
Here’s a “Karn Evil” cover featuring her:
