The transition to the new inhalers was mandated by Congress to remove one of the last remaining exemptions to the Montreal Protocol, a treaty signed in 1987 to reduce chlorofluorocarbon, or CFC, emissions that can damage the Earths ozone layer. The Food and Drug Administration was charged with phasing out all medications using CFC propellants once viable alternatives became available. Albuterol inhalers, used as rescue medicines for asthma attacks, were some of the last holdouts.

Every time I think of this, I get furious. How dare these people? Not only do the new inhalers not work, but when they were re-formulated they suddenly became "new" drugs and no generics were available. As with everything the government does, costs increased and quality and access decreased.
I guess they think one way to save the earth is to kill off everyone with respiratory problems. Oh, and some of the new inhalers contain ethanol. How can that be good for my lungs?
Most people have not experienced suffocation and do not understand that someone's own lungs can suddenly close and kill them.
I would suggest you discuss with your doctor about getting a nebulizer in your home with liquid albuterol. Maybe it's not affected since it's air-propelled. Good luck.
O.M.Gosh. This is me complaining to my doctor. The new powdered inhalers feel like NOTHING gets into your lungs, and it probably isn’t.
“it probably isnt.”
Should say, “and they probably don’t.”
sorry
Albuterol Inhalers from Mexico work and they are less than $2 each. Everyone knows someone who vacations there. Have them stop by a pharmacy, no prescription needed, and pick up a dozen.
Our sons supply was stolen, but my parents are going there next winter so hopefully they can get some for him.
If you are having trouble taking a breath the fact you aren’t getting as much of a forceful application is a big problem. They should have went with co2 or nitrogen but this would require many more inhalers because they wouldn’t contain as much propellant for a given volume
I have one, but it’s inconvenient to use on a regular basis and makes me jittery, unlike an inhaler. I certainly can’t take it with me places. If I use it at night, I won’t sleep for hours. Maybe I could get more housework done. ;-)
Right now I’m a hot mess and haven’t slept well in days due to this persistent cough. I feel like Fritz Von Erich is doing his iron claw hold on my lungs. (old-timers will get this)
Do those inhalers still use CFC? I thought it was banned everywhere. That is good info to know. Thanks.
Ethanol=grain alcohol=VERY rapid absorption. Ethanol is the one good thing about this. The downside is that now you might run into problems with DUI laws.
Can you say overregulated? Of course you can. When one law leads to breaking another, you know that a tipping point approaches RAPIDLY.
Reagan’s fault.
I know exactly what you mean. I used one inhaler them was switched to another and Sprivia caps to inhale. The inhaler is Proair hfr and it is no where near as effective.
I also ended up with a nebulizer and liquid albuterol.
I also use Symbicort twice a day.
More medications to replace one inhaler that worked.
The inhalers need to be shaken vigorously before pressing the activator.
Those powder things are supposedly “long term.” They feel like nothing and darn sure can’t stop an attack.
I ran into some powerful Ventolin inhalers like the old ones. Knocked the crap out of an attack. So the insurance company says I either buy crappy, environmental friendly ones or pay out of my pocket for the Ventolin.
Another vote for Albuterol inhalers from Mexico. They look and work just like the old ones.
I can get six for the cost of one copay for the new ones.
CFC atomizes really well and the velocity is higher so consider using a spacer for best results.
Have you thought of getting these inhalers through Canada Pharmacies??
you’re right, they do, but it does get in there- enough at least ot keep a person breathing well- I actually feel the grit that gets caught at back of mouth, so most makes it’s way back to lungs but I do think the aerosol ones get more medicine to the lungs
last i checked, the ozone was healed -
And the amount of CFCs in a tiny inhaler is miniscule, probably only a couple of grams.
Let’s not forget that China is dumping CFC’s into the atmosphere at an alarming rate, anyway. Besides, it’s not as if an inhaler holds enough CFC to make up for all of the other aerosol products that no longer use CFC’s. Every asthmatic on the planet together couldn’t possibly use near enough CFC to cause ozone issues again; if the two were even related.
I think that the advantage of the CFC charged inhalers is that the propellant is liquid under moderate pressure and instantly turns to vapor when you press the nozzle, propelling the medicine well. CO2 and nitrogen both have a very low boiling point, meaning the vessel must be able to withstand very high pressures and would freeze the medicine upon release. Probably not a good thing.
I’m not a chemist or chemical engineer, but this make sense to me.
