Thinking of going back to work at 65.

Posted on 04/24/2019 10:12:30 AM PDT by Catmom

Any thoughts? Personal experiences? Advice?

BTW, it's voluntary, pretty much not necessary financially. I've been getting an income stream from my investments and just signed up for Medicare.

Thanks.

“Yep, I see that also. I suspect for some work IS their life. Kinda sad IMO. Not me.”

How very true. Some peoples’ identity becomes intertwined and one with their job. This is particularly true in intense occupations such as firefighters, police, military etc. Once they retire there goes their identity. If they don’t have a strong constitution and insight as to what is going on, they tend to lose the will to live....and don’t.

Volunteer doing something you enjoy somewhere with maximum flexibility. And never forget, you’re a volunteer who can walk away when necessary. The title of your thread is misleading, BTW, since you’re not asking advice about working, you’re asking advice about volunteering.

This is very good advice, because you will be penalized for taking SS early and still making income. Get some advice about this claw back law.

That’s a perfect description of the CEO at my last hospital.

Been there since nineteen f’ing eighty three AND NEEDED TO GO TEN YEARS AGO.

People ask why he’s still there. I say he’s probably terrified he’d die if he retired.

And from what I know of the man he’d have good reason to fear what lies beyond.

That’s a great idea.

And honestly, the extra income is nice.

There’s something very satisfying about bringing home a paycheck.

If it’s something you would enjoy doing, and won’t hate getting up in the morning, I say go for it.

Medicare, you’ll be assessed a 10% penalty for the rest of your life.

I believe it is Part B that you have to sign up for and the longer you put it off, the higher the penalty. My mom got bitten by that one. She paid extra for more than 30 years—she lived to 99.

Working still at 79. Old friend pays me to watch over a couple of his operations. Flexible hours and plenty of money. Rewarding when you can solve problems with your experience. Third one of these I’ve had. These rewards are the main thing for me.

If you can, don’t take SS until 70, to increase the monthly amount, and you will have to pay income tax on it. And depending how you treat the income, you also get hit with FICA on it too. They get you coming and going. Also you will get hit with income adjusted cost of Medicare premium. It costs me nearly three times what a low income retiree pays.

They’re gonna find more ways to nail high income seniors.

It’s like they wanna punish us for being productive.

I still haven’t taken SS and really don’t know when I will.
Meantime, I’m living off an annuity and have no debts.

There’s some ladies in my church my age who still have to work and are subtly pressuring me to go back. I have to wonder if they’re not resentful. I feel sorry for them.

My daughter’s a nurse working those shifts (3x12)...it’s tough on her.

I sure couldn’t do 12 hour shifts at this point in life either.

How old is your daughter?

I worked 12 hours full time in my early 30’s and it could get exhausting.

We’re all wired differently. You have to find your own way. I retired nearly 30 years ago and never looked back. Worked day and night building a business, was burned out, so I sold out.

I never worked again and never had any desire to. Always found something to do I enjoyed. Yet some of my senior friends couldn’t stand being retired and went back to work.
