That Coen Brothers movie titled "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs"

Posted on 11/18/2018 5:14:03 PM PST by SamAdams76

I was out on the Netflix last night and saw this new Coen Brothers movie that was available. I was always a fan of the Coen Brothers with "Fargo" being one of my favorite "dark comedy" movies of all time. I especially liked that car salesman fellow who was constantly screwing up and ended up getting his wife inadvertently murdered by having her kidnapped for ransom by a couple of bungling criminals who hated each other.

Basically all their movies are worth watching with "The Big Lebowski" being another favorite. Especially when that John Goodman character throws his friend's ashes into the wind and they end up blowing right back in their faces.

So I immediately clicked PLAY on this new movie which I hadn't even heard of and I'm not sure what to think. It was such an odd movie. It was actually six different stories, all with an "Old West" theme. The cinematography was excellent with some of the most incredibly brilliant scenery I've ever seen in a movie and had me tripping at times. And the stories were just plain weird and might have been drug-induced. Though one of them was clearly based on a Jack London short story. It was about 2am that I saw this movie and was half asleep during parts so that might have affected my take. It now seems like I dreamed the movie as opposed to watching it in real life.

Just wondering what others thought of it. I might watch the movie again under more sober and wakeful conditions.

I think they were being ironic by saying it was a true story.

My heart! Millers Crossing is probably my favorite Coen Bros. film, after Raising Arizona. It’s a very tongue-in-cheek takeoff on film noir. The hero gets beaten up again and again, and never shows a mark. The plot is beautiful and complex, IMO.

I will admit that my wife doesn’t like it much.

I'm kinda split. I thought the first 2 were pretty funny, but then it got darker and darker. The guy with no arms and legs,....come on! The spinster on the wagon train, I about cried. The last one I didn't even get.

It's only a topic of interest if your weird, but I don't see any great movie skills. I did like the prospector though. The spinster built you up for a happy ending and the prospector seemed hopeless but then turned a twist.

It was kinda like "What did I just watch?" The guy with no arms and legs, Jeesh!

My favorite Coen Brothers movie (perhaps my favorite movie period) was “True Grit.” It scored 89% in Rotten Tomatoes and featured Hailee Steinfeld (won an award for best young actress), Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin. Two Jewish brothers who wonderfully wove in the hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.”

No County for Old Men
Blood Simple

Those are my favorite creepy Coen flicks.

I agree. It was almost as good as the original (John Wayne’s)

Outstanding series of short stories. Funny, sad, serious, thought provoking, exceptional characters and character development, gorgeous cinematography, excellent writing. The Cohen Brothers unique stamp appears throughout.

One word of advice. Pause the first and last page of each short story and read for extra added insights, and be sure to pay special attention to each of the story picture plates and their subheadings.

Enjoy, we did.

I watched part of it earlier today. Very dark humor. I may try again or not. Not sure I need that kind of darkness right now.

I watched Ballard of Buster Scruggs last night also. Enjoyed it. Coen Brothers are excellent film makers.

It is an anthology of a series of six vignettes, all with Western themes. Lots of old western songs for the soundtrack. Excellent cinematography.

It was different but then I like different sometimes.

I'd watch it again.
