Science writer Gary Taubes has a knack for subverting conventional wisdom. Sixteen years ago, he published a groundbreaking feature article in The New York Times Magazine arguing that decades' worth of government-approved nutritional advice was flat-out wrong, ideologically motivated, and contributing to rising rates of obesity and diabetes. Traditional dieting guidance attacking fatty food and praising carbohydrates, he wrote, was based on "a big fat lie." The Man Who Hated Carbs Before It Was Cool
Of course Dr. Atkins had been saying essentially the same thing for 30 years before Taubes wrote his article for the NYT. But Dr. Atkins was considered an outsider in the AMA community. But Dr. Robert Atkins had the last laugh; looks like he was right about the ill effects of sugar and carbs all along. But since good carb science was settled, and he wasnt deferential to the rest of the medical community that disagreed with him and because he wasnt always polite he was ridiculed and viciously attacked personally. His nutrition plan was referred to as a fad diet and called dangerous.
He reminds me of our President.
But back to Gary Taubes; after Dr. Atkins death in 2003 he more or less took over his mantle. He argues that sugar is the root of many health problems. In his book The Case Against Sugar he contends that it got that way thanks to big sugar and big government the usual suspects, money and politics. As is often the case in these situations science goes by the wayside and facts are what we say facts are. And that brings me around to this weeks Monday Moanin: the deplorable state of science.
It started when I read an editorial in my local paper on Saturday that laid out this fact:
the debate about whether climate change exists, and whether humans are causing it, has been closed in the scientific community for years at least 97 percent of scientists say it does exist and we are causing it, according to a 2016 examination of nearly 12,000 research papers.
First of all, debate is NEVER closed in the scientific community. Idiot. Science is an open proposition; things are assumed to be true until they are proven not to be. Scientific inquiry is a continuous process.
Remember, at one time 99% of nutritionists thought this food pyramid was correct.
Until they decided it was upside down. Alas, after a generation of brainwashing its hard to convince people to the contrary. Gary Taube, discussing that issue:
In the science in which I was raisedphysics and chemistry, the hard sciencesthe last thing you want to do is get an assumption accepted into the theory of how things work without rigorously testing it, because then people will build on it and it will grow and infect the whole thought construction.
In a field like nutrition and obesity research, you've now got these enormous institutional dogmas built in that I and others are arguing are simply wrong. How do you get the institutions to change their belief systems?
Nevertheless, the big lie worked so well with nutrition they used the same model for climate science. The result is a generation that has been brainwashed by incontrovertible facts about global warming that are neither incontrovertible nor facts. And they will go to any lengths to discredit anything that might stand in their way. This is how the sugar industry handled it:
A sugar industry executive (copped) to spending a half-million dollars on research trying to find anything that an artificial sweetener does that's damaging. They would give female rats the equivalent of 60 cans a day of soda and then hope that they would produce rats with birth defects so they could say it was as bad as thalidomide.
All the global warming industry has to do is continue to hide the data of its flawed studies while promoting the results and continue to claim that 97% of scientists agree with their flawed data so the science is closed.
When facts are fungible there in no science.

What about all the carbonated beverages, beer & soda?
WE ARE KILLING THE PLANET!
Shut down Coke and Bud now!
“The Science Inquisition.”
Leave my cherry Cokes and RCs alone.
LOL...we’re dating ourselves! I saw “Carb” and also thought carburetor. Anybody under 30 probably has never even heard that word.
Oh, I thought this was going to be about old-school engine tuning. Meh.
And just who turned Galileo over to the inquisition?...His scientist peers, that's who. And let that be a lesson to you, this is what happens when you dare to go against consensus!
Turn in to stop, then back off two and one half turns................
Yep!
Might as well be talking Martian, to a Millennial...............
These people are absolutely brilliant--always doing something "smarter" than the Average Joe. Let THEM eat the carbs!
I need to go on Atkins. I’ve tried it before but found it a boring diet. I can go without pasta but craved breads. Sadly one Guinness sets one back 10.6 carbs.
“I thought meat caused global warming?”
it does. in fact ALL food causes global warming and the only way to save the planet is for all humans to eat dirt instead of food ...
Atkins and Keto are great starter diets, but they’re hard to maintain long term and can be rough on your liver. If you can adhere to them for 4 weeks, you should rid yourself of any cravings for carbohydrates and can reintroduce fibrous carbs like fruits.
My rule of thumb is to avoid any “white” foods (yes, that’s racist) such as bread, white rice, potatoes, and sugar. Everything else is fair game. Weight will come off naturally.
“Cow farts”
Silly. It’s not Atkins; that’s passe. It’s now “Keto.”
Getcher propaganda terms in order. /s
Here’s the deal: I did Atkins when I was most ignorant and, for a time, it worked for me. Like most everyone out there, no ‘diet’ is panacea for all. MOTUS makes some very good points, points which I elaborate at-length in my book due to the fact that it’s a little more complicated than his hit-n-run post.
If you’re still doing Atkins after 20 years, I can only presume a couple of things: 1. It’s working for you and 2. You’ve probably modified things a bit for what works best for you & you alone.
No ‘diet’ will cure everyone’s problems. “Keto” included.
But the takeaway from MOTUS should be a very Conservative reaction:
Question EVERYTHING the government says, especially when special interests are driving things. It will take generations for the damage wrought over the past 70 years to be reversed...if action began TODAY.
But the problem governs not government action. Nor the medical community. It governs personal responsibility. I fault everyone suffering from this so-called “opioid epidemic” for their own poor choices. That includes not asking “why” they have the pain in the first place. Who the hell actually trusts their doctor implicitly? That’s as crazy as “settled science.”
Sadly, I doubt I will live to see a medical name applied to the condition from which I recovered and which I believe afflicts 2/3 of the country, as this “climate change” debate is a red flag for the state of science...applicable to all areas, not just health.
Unnnngggghhhh
As can easily be seen, the scam artists LOWERED the measured temperatures before 2000 and have raised them after 2000. That shows a warming according to the corrected temperatures.
If you look at the measured temperatures, you'll see variations but no overall warming temperatures. They aren't even good liars.
Carbs...I guess my 57 BelAir wagon needs fuel injection then. I guess I should keep volcanoes from erupting....
Why don’t they just cut to the chase, and say it....
Humans cause global warming, and the only solution is for all you peons to kill yourself.
I’m diabetic and I eat carbs. Take more insulin, however.
