What is this?

Caught on trail cam last week, is my side-yard.

There are 2 squirrels that play on the stone fence, near the cam; one red; one grey.

This is in the Northeast Kingdom of very, very rural VT.

Could it be a piebald of some sort?; it's about the size of a grey squirrel; a love child?

Blowing up the pic, changed the color a bit; its coat is a very, very light, orange/cinnamon color.

Would love suggestions; even snarky ones. :)

About 20 yrs. ago, commuting by bus from Md to DC, we observed several white squirrels in residential areas on a daily basis.

Later, in our Maryland suburb, we had dozens of black squirrels.

Lots of grey squirrels always nearby, but no red ones. FWIW.

I set one up like that in my yard, and it really works. Used 1/2 a slinky to do it.

It is definitely a False Squirrel. You can tell by the extra girth. They get that color shortly before they pop. Be careful ... they say the blood spatter when it pops can effect bystanders, causing a similar condition and similar result ... the good new is that the baby Chupacabra that results will be smallish. They grow fast.

It’s the body size of a good healthy grey, I’ll agree but the colorization is light cinnamon, fer sure. Hopefully I can get a better image in the future. Is Cinnamon the New Gray?...

Well, we did [finally] have ice-out about a week ago; maybe 10 days ago, bob houses still out, people using them; tons of migrant birds; snowmachine peeps all gone home. Heh.
