Paris (AFP) – Cro-Magnon man had a face covered in lumps including a large one on his forehead — likely benign tumours caused by a genetic disease, according to a team of French researchers in new findings published Friday.
The skeleton of Cro-Magnon 1, a male Homo sapiens dating back 28,000 years, was discovered in 1868 in the Eyzies cave in France’s southwestern Dordogne region.
To mark 150 years since the discovery of the bones, a team of researchers including anthropologist Philippe Charlier reexamined the remains.
At the end of their investigation, “we proposed a new diagnosis: he had suffered from a type of neurofibromatosis,” Charlier told AFP.
Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disease which can cause benign tumours to develop in the nervous system, and also spots or areas of pigmentation on the skin.
The team’s findings will be published Friday in the medical journal The Lancet.
Cro-Magnon man’s skull “has a lesion on the forehead which corresponds to the presence of a neurofibroma (a benign nerve sheath tumor)” which has eroded the bone, Charlier said.
“His left ear canal was also damaged, presumably also by a tumour that had grown,” he added.
Equipped with this diagnosis, “we have made a realistic reconstruction of the face of this middle-aged man, taking into account his pathology”.

Second remark is correct. First remark is an expression of [not knowing[..My DNA analysis by two different companies find no Negroid blood. I have neurofibromatosis. There are 7 different genetic variations. Nobody else in my family has this though several have the Cafe au Lait spots as I do, also.

By best friend (for half a century) has it. It's terrible, how stigmatized he feels because of it. Has allowed all of his hair to grow out in order to hide it, and never appears in public without wearing his derby.
Hate to think that it might possibly affect his life expectancy.

Some pale complexions were brought to Europe from the Near East, and probably also from Central Asia by successive barbarian invasions. Then there the the 40% of people in the British Isles with the “ginger” gene inherited from the Neanderthals that allowed Sapien women to absorb Vitamin D, grow full hips, and bear live young. Probably some Neanderthal genetics in other Europeans. A while ago there was an article about a 10,000 Briton from the Cornwall area who had dark skin. Certainly those who lived close enough to the sea to get Vitamin D from cod liver and other fish products would not need to have light skin, but those living away from the sea would survive better with light skin.

They would have more difficulty bearing live young with narrow hips and rickets caused by lack of Vitamin D. Dark skin and no dietary source is not a helpful combination for childbearing.
