Dear FReepdom,
Well, I'm on the virtual road again, lookin' for a job suitable for a high tech redneck as I camp out in a cheap motel and drive a rented U-Haul pickup truck in Gainesville, Florida.
I've already put in for a couple of jobs that are telecommute. But I practically got shanghaied into submitting an application to a company called ASML in Wilton, Connecticut.
On paper, at least, I might be able to aggressively jump into this job, which pays $70/hr as contract.
Which money is sorely needed if I actually went there. Multi thousand dollar apartments. That's serious green.
But I did an overview of the situation that I'd face. I've been on a serious Christian spiritual thrust, and I mean like I'm channeling Jesus so strong sometimes that it's like I identify right down to the guts with His manly redneck side. And I have written more than one gospel song in first person prophetic mode (laden with His promises, addressed right to the listener).
And that's a problem now, I foresee. Because I can already envision what will happen when I go into one of those etiolated New England churches, or what's left of them. This ain't yesteryear's Puritans, who would understand. When those Puritans died, nothing replaced them. Only the shell of their legacy, which is painfully worldly now. I saw it happen in redneck Gainesville, how much more in New England? They serve out little spoonfuls of tincture of Jesus when I wanna haul out a bucket of stronger stuff and say HERE! And I'd get rebuffed at least, if not kicked out.
And wealth is leaving Connecticut (for what that's worth, but it probably augurs worse taxes or else a bad bust).
And then there's the Sandy Hook shooting. That was well chewed over on FR, but what strikes me is the way they reacted to it. There was such a hush-hush about the local details that some have proposed that the event was fabricated. I don't believe that myself. My hunch is that Sandy Hook was so ashamed -- not grieved, as in the church shooting in Texas, but ashamed -- that they sanitized it. Which is why not even obituaries, something that a more Christian, country-minded folk would not have omitted. And shame is the obverse of pride. I wouldn't get along with those folks as the robust "humble redneck" at all! It would be stilted to an unreal degree.
That said, if I absolutely HAD to go to Connecticut, what on earth could a Redneck do in that Yankee land? Beside pine away wishing he was down south again?
The Wilton, Weston, New Canaan area is big bucks.
No Kidding. Apartment that cost me $800 in Nashville is $2400 in that area.

But its the gospel gun that I would be shooting.
Im all for the Gospel. But when some crack addled Morlock is swinging a tire iron at your head I doubt hell stop to discuss the finer points of Mark or Luke with you.
Trust in the Lord, but keep your powder dry.

And to look at that New Canaan name is to hanker for yesteryear when people actually took the bible symbolism seriously.
Wilton is also the name of a brand of baking pans.
“Hartford was a shithole in the 60s. God knows what it is like now.”
Still is. Probably worse.
If you’re looking for ‘down home’, there’s always Bridgeport.
Well, I’ve found literal angelic protection, which is what guys like you, with all due respect, might be giving short shrift. You might be worrying too much about that aspect of it all.
Read the accounts where a crowd goes to stone Jesus and He just walks nonchalantly through it and departs.
And also read about the deliverance miracles to Peter. Who once thought he would have to chop his way out of a bad situation with a sword, and dropped that idea after the Resurrection.
I don’t snub my Father that way.
There was a situation, I even shared it long long ago on FR, where a van hit the back of my motorcycle. It ought to, by the laws of physics, have knocked that bike out from under me, catching me on its hood, and my helmet would have bashed into the windshield. Hard enough, and it would have gone through the glass which, due to its lamination, would not have fallen out of the way but stayed there to decapitate me.
This didn’t happen, or else I am now living a dream. I hung onto said bike till the van, with bike impaled in its radiator, came to a stop. Then I tumbled off... in the FORWARD direction.
Tell me that angels didn’t strengthen my grip when it was needed. Tell me that. I will laugh to your face.
Don’t have to but it sure is fun asking them why they don’t have it and then hitting them with that line. Kinda lets the gas out of their arrogant balloon.
William F Buckley told our Htfd audience that he came to the conclusion as a long time resident of the state, CT is politically retarded.
It’s chased nearly all its Fortune 100 wealth out:
GE and Aetna left.
It’s dead, Jim:

Nice hiking in the NE and NW part of the state, and the SE shoreline is fine, too.
Work in Wilton, visit hikes along the AT.
Bike paths are good for xc skiing and biking.
Be sure you have a good job lined up by summer outside of CT so you can bail out.
Employers will understand your short tenure in CT...
Good luck
Read the accounts where a crowd goes to stone Jesus and He just walks nonchalantly through it and departs.
I have. And Id hasten to say that you arent Him. Pride, and not heeding danger, goeth before falls.
So we should probably end this conversation now.
I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.
Stay safe,
L
FWIW, some great revolutionary roots up there in New England. Check them out and channel their inner rebelliousness.
As for Wilton, CT, it is one of the absolute safest, crime-free areas you could live in the country. It's also very expensive, as you probably realize if you researched the area. But the $70/hr consulting job will get you by just fine if you choose a reasonable home.
I haven't read the replies yet but I bet a lot of the Freepers are going to tell you not to make the move. I've been around the country myself, Iowa, Alabama, Georgia, California, Illinois, Massachusetts and now Connecticut. I can tell you that this part of Connecticut (Fairfield County) is very affluent yet can be very woodsy and rural depending on where you choose to live. I love hiking and there are so many trails I haven't even discovered them all yet. The traffic can be pretty bad but once you learn backroads, you can avoid most of that and get around quite easily. We do have some pretty intense winter weather at times but spectacular summer and autumn weather.
Freepmail me if you want more details.
I think you should pray. And then you should strongly consider going. Sometimes what God wants us to do isnt within our comfort zone. I also think that God sends some awful strong hints at times. You say you were shanghaid. Really? Are you sure?
Andrew Breitbart was spot on in noting that politics is downstream of culture. Were wasting our time trying to change the politics without changing the underlying problems with the culture. Politics also happens to be a scam, but I digress. You might find that evangelizing is something youre supposed to do. In which case youll be in a great place to do it.
Politics is a scam and were suckers for playing.
But anyhow... I understand how that’s hard to believe. It was hard for Peter to believe too. That’s why Jesus did allow Peter a go at it.
As for me... I went on for years after that to keep on playing keyboards in church. And was complimented on how I could “play it through my fingers.” And went on from there to other venues where I did similar things, until I was really hammering it out in Omaha.
And in the process my wrists grew a couple of sizes. I can hardly even wear one of those “biker wrist bands” any more, the ones with the double prongs and double-holed straps. And I’ve stopped trying. As I can’t seen to find anyone who will make a larger version for me. The tip of the strap keeps coming out of the strap keeper. Since I wore one to be cool when in high school, I know how it used to be. I’ve got HEAVY, STRONG forearms and hands now. And that’s just from “Sunday driving.”
Nope. God’s giving me what I need. I’m not going out there worried about “crack addled Morlocks.”
But that cuts another way. The danger you face needs to be heeded too. Maybe with your leaning on arms of men, you are the one keeping yourself out of the effective battle front.

And Peter wasn’t Jesus either... but look what happened with him. Are you deef??? Or chicken, which is why you said you’re parting (so you might not see this, but others WILL).
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts
And what’s more did you catch it when He said His followers would do MIGHTIER ACTS than those He showed?
Maybe a little holy FEAR is due, bub?
