An estimated 3 million Americans carry a loaded handgun on themselves every day, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health.
Researchers from the University of Washington, Harvard University and the University of Colorado conducted the National Firearms Survey in 2015. From the 4,000 U.S. adults who participated in the online survey, 1,500 of them were handgun owners. One significant question was asked how often they carried a loaded handgun when they were out of their homes.
The objectives of the study were to “determine the frequency of loaded handgun carrying among US adult handgun owners, characterize those who carry, and examine concealed carrying by state concealed carry laws.”
In addition to the 3 million who carry daily, researchers found that 9 million Americans carry a gun once a month. People in that category were disproportionately likely to be conservative men ranging in age from 18 to 29 and living the south.
Four out of five of those who carried said protection was the main reason they armed themselves. About 6 percent said they’d been threatened by someone with a gun in the last five years.

I would submit that the number is much larger.
The smart ones just didn’t respond to the question.
Which raises the question, “How many carry unloaded handguns?”
Only 3 million were stupid enough to answer that question.
I think most people, if confronted with a survey asking if they carried a loaded firearm daily, might not answer truthfully.
Only 1% of the population? I think much, much more.
That's what I was thinking - I don't generally talk about it, and if someone asked I always answer "no" - unless it's an LEO.

I don’t believe those numbers for one second.
There are probably that many inner city thugs carrying guns every day. Let alone law abiding citizens.
A better question would be to look into why citizens do not carry concealed weapons. That might reveal the intimidation by state governments.
The study is redundant.
If 10% of the population carried, everyone would be much safer.
Makes you think... That number is much greater than the transgendered population. We are expected to turn the world upside down to accommodate them.
3 million? That’s like 1%. Does not sound correct.
You would be surprised. There is a sizable cadre of concealed carry practitioners who insist on carrying "condition 3," also known as "Israeli carry," which is a full magazine but an empty chamber.
My thoughts too. Another three million (at least) aren’t talking!
I carry around my property because of coyotes, dog packs, and other critters that might be rabid. The rabid human kind also.
This is pure BS. I would wager, that this many people in Georgia alone carry.
A police officer friend of mine tells me that 25-30% of Walmart shoppers carry, and the vast majority are women.
