I have received three emails this morning that started with "Happy Memorial Day."
When younger kid was in middle school she took a trip to DC and was able to get a pencil rubbing of my dad’s best friend’s name on “the wall”. Had to stand on her teacher’s shoulders to reach up high enough. She fancied it up in a nice shadow box display and gave it to him on his birthday. Such a touching moment.
During my time in Afghanistan I stood in many fallen comrade salutes and saw way too many flag draped coffins start the final journey home. I don’t think any of the families at the other end were happy. I would never say “Happy Memorial Day” to anyone.

I was Honorably Discharged having the “standard four” service ribbon bar, including the Good Conduct.
Nothing special. Really rather plain and undistinguished.
I was drafted, and did my 2, “retiring” as a permanent E4, and Acting Sgt (Back in The Nam, only,) and then onlt for a couple of months before being assigned to DC — and then out. Nothing special. No stories — just like millions of others who did Nothing Big. I was There. Of that, I am proud and satisfied.
Right on.
I was just on the phone with a buddy of mine, an active duty US Army Lt. Colonel.
As we were hanging up he wished me a warm and commemorative Memorial Day.
None of this happy stuff for us.
We went to a ceremony today where the names of war dead from WWI to Iraq were read off and we p[aid tribute to three Gold Star mothers in the audience.
Memorial Day - A day for remembrance and gratitude of all our fallen heroes, who gave up all their tomorrows, that we might enjoy all of our todays.
We shall remain forever indebted, to those who shall remain forever young.

The evening news just ended and before I could change the channel, TMZ came on and the idiot host just wished everyone a Happy Memorial Day.
“Happy”? Were these sent from people you know? I hope not. It’s a somber day.
