Fake News Pic of 5-Year-Old Handcuffed due to Trump Immigration order was from 2015

Two days ago Yahoo News claimed a 5-Year-Old American citizen was handcuffed at the Dulles Airport for hours.    The Independent in the UK made the same unfounded accusation.  The accusation flew around the Internet.

I suspected fake news.  Let us see the pictures of the handcuffed 5 year old.

Everyone has phones and cameras today.

We have seen plenty of examples of fake accusations.

It did not take me long.  It was fake news.

Snopes found a picture that was used in this accusation, that was from 2015.

A 5-Year-old was detained for four hours at Dulles, but he was not handcuffed.

The boy was eight and he took a swing at the Deputy. The Deputy cuffed him and explained to him that no matter how angry you are, you don’t get to hit police officers or other people.

I don’t remember exactly where this was but I recently saw the story about this photo. The kid was disruptive in class (ADHD) and the school safety officer put him in handcuffs. I think the parents sued or something like that....point is, that’s a school, and that’s a school officer. NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY AIRPORT!! UGH I’m convinced that pretty much any negative news that comes out about Trump is FAKE.

That kind of treatment doesn’t typically have the outcome the adult hopes it will. It made life easier for the sheriff deputy tho.

In this case, it reportedly did work - the boy calmed down and apologised, but I would agree doing something like that could have backfired.

But the particular Deputy was a school teacher before he became a police officer - which is why he works as a school resource officer. And he knew the kid. From memory, I also believe that he had the video this photo was taken from deliberately to document what was happening.

It’s true the kid wasn’t that dangerous at eight - but you need to teach these lessons before kids become dangerous. Wait until they are capable of hurting people and you create all sorts of problems.

I’m a teacher myself with specialised training in dealing with kids who are prone to aggression and violence. Doing something like this certainly wouldn’t be my preferred response or my first response, but I can understand it. And if other approaches weren’t working - you can’t let the behaviour continue forever.
