Trump reminds me of a different age
12-31-16 | Myself

Posted on 12/31/2016 10:27:31 AM PST by YihYthink

I don't normally post on Freeper web site because as a political observer I see myself as less then significant. Yet we are ending one of the most interesting election cycles in my lifetime and my fascination's with history in which I have lived through, to me their are comparisons that I have not seen related within current discussions.

Donald Trump maybe, (remains to be seen) a transformaitive President who takes on a corrupt burdensome bureaucracy. This is clearly understood by many yet I see Trump as something very much from the past. His view reminds me strongly of 1960's Democratic Party, the one of JFK and more dynamic expansion.

He fits the old Democratic party before it was taken over by left wing intellectuals who see the American experience to be corrupt because of the Constitution which does not recognize the legitimate roll of government which is central control.

Here are points to support my thinking

1. Trump pro American labor and concerned about unfair importing from other countries.

2. Pro American and believes in a strong defense as many Democratic leaders of that age did, yet strongly recognize social imbalances within our culture.

3. Believes in governments roll in correcting imbalances yet is more likely to move away from dependency type programs.

4. Like JFK sees the benefit of tax cuts to stimulate economic growth.

5. Believes in a robust science and space program to expand knowledge.

Of course Donald Trump is not a 1960's Democrat and his experience comes out of living the American dream not as a politician yet as a business man who believes in the greatness of America. Yet to me Donald Trump helps clarify how far the modern Democratic party has come from the age of JFK. The Party is the political wing of the leftest professors embedded in our American University system with tenure. This to me is the story in itself and I post this for consideration maybe someone has a much better view other then my simple view, a person who loves our country and the Constitution.

Excellent post .

My father always respected JFK. He might have made errors of judgement and been morally lacking in areas but he was a genuine patriot who hated Marxism. The Democrat party of today would repulse him.

The Trump movement and our politics in general over the last couple of years are certainly unlike anything I have ever experienced. If anything it seems we are living in almost biblical times

I have thought that Trump has elements of a Harry Truman Democrat. Those Democrats from 50+ years ago are nothing like the ones in todays world.

His view reminds me strongly of 1960s Democratic Party …
The Dems of back then were not anti-bureaucracy. Nor were many in the GOP. Remember, The Conscience of a Conservative was published in 1960, and said this about the views of both parties back then (first two paragraphs of the second chapter):
The New Deal, Dean Acheson wrote approvingly in a book called A Democrat Looks At His Party, “conceived of the federal government as the whole people organized to do what had to be done.”

A year later, Mr. (Arthur) Larson wrote A Republican Looks At His Party, and made much the same claim in his book for Modern Republicans. The “underlying philosophy” of the New Republicanism, said Mr. Larson, is that “if a job has to be done to meet the needs of the people, and no one else can do it, then it is the proper function of the federal government.”

Here we have, by prominent spokesmen of both political parties, an unqualified repudiation of the principle of limited government. There is no reference by either of them to the Constitution, or any attempt to define the legitimate functions of government. The government can do whatever needs to be done; note, too, the implicit but necessary assumption that it is the government itself that determines what needs to be done.

We must not, I think, underrate the importance of these statements. They reflect the view of a majority of the leaders of one of our parties, and of a strong minority among the leaders of the other, and they propound the first principle of totalitarianism: that the State is competent to do all things, and is limited in what it actually does only by the will of those who control the State. …
Now this is what Trump is up against: decades of entrenchment of this way of thinking. And this is what he needs the greatest support in combating.

Just for the record, I broke up the two paragraphs into four for emphasis.

This is true. The Democrat Party I experienced as a child and supported as a young adult fits your descriptions very closely. Labor Unions were one of the strongest lobby groups back then. This was long before people like Al Sharpton and groups like Planned Parenthood took over control of that party.

Since the Rodney King event in the early 90’s, the dems have become fractured, balkanized and self centered, to the exclusion of understanding any issues other than their own. To paper over the areas of ignorance, today’s Dems will use labels such as ‘Hater, Racist, Sexist, Xenophobe or Bigot’ in hopes of rendering their opponent silent.

True as much as how far the Democrats have strayed since the 60s. The one thing that struck me is that we need to take back the term intellectual, as well. These academic leftists are not intellectuals, they are ineffectuals.

I see myself as less then significant.

Given that you do not know the difference between "then" and "than".. you are likely correct.

Simple is good for two reasons. One is that truth is rarely complicated, it’s lies that take a lot of ‘splaining. The second reason simple is good is that I can understand it.

My hope is that Trump will focus on what I call the 90% solution:

90% of Americans had heath-care before the Dems screwed with it.

90% of Americans are not gay, lesbian or some of those other things that I don’t know what they are.

99% of Americans actually know what sex they are.

90% of Americans do not need a safe room if they see a clown.

These are the Americans that have been ignored or ridiculed for 8 years that I hope Trump will focus on.

JFK was NOT the Democrat party. In fact, like Reagan, his party hated him. A big issue was that he was Catholic and the Dems thought his organized religion would demand the Pope run the country.

JFK wanted tax cuts, while the Dems wanted tax increases. The Dems have always been the Tax-n-Spend party. Always.

JFK sought integration, while the Dems reject the Civil Rights Act. So, no, the Dems did not seek to "correct imbalances". The Dems enacted Jim Crow laws.

JFK sought a stronger military, while Eisenhower constantly fought the Dems about that. They wanted defense spending in their States but not a stronger military.

JFK barely won his election against Nixon with 34,220,984 votes to Nixon's 34,108,157.

JFK sought more technology spending, but he had to get past the Dems that refused it in favor of social spending. He only won them over by tying the space race to the communist arms race.

When there is an error like that on the first line, I read no further.

Besides, I didn’t even scratch him.

You left out the most important JFK point

JFK was assassinated, and the Presidency reverted to an unabashed leftist Lyndon Johnson.

99% of Americans actually know what sex they are.

How true. Yet today’s liberals experience great angst, about “gender identity”, “gay, lesbian, trans whatever” peoples.

I always wonder, when did it become cool to be gay? We somehow see the liberals going from wanting “tolerance” to wanting special rights, to then positively affirming homosexuality and alternative lifestyles.

The next thing you know, they will be pushing “trans” whatever, and make that cool, and tell us your life isn’t complete until you have had your hormone shots and sex change operations......................

This shows how much the world has changed, and how far left the liberals have gone. Humphrey was liberal for his day. But his statement here would be eschewed by today’s liberals.
