Nikki Haley may have been born in the United States but her extended family back in India is thrilled that the South Carolina governor has been named by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as ambassador to the United Nations.
Haley's parents hail from rural Punjab, in northwestern India. They moved to Amritsar - home to the Golden Temple that is the most holy place of the Sikh religion - before emigrating to North America in the early 1960s.
Haley, 44, was born Nimrata Randhawa in Bamberg, South Carolina - she was called "Nikki" as a child and took the family name of husband Michael when they married in Sikh and Methodist ceremonies in 1996.
Kanwaljit Singh Randhawa, a 70-year-old cousin, told Reuters family and friends were delighted by Haley's appointment and said it could help improve relations between the United States and India...

Nikki Haley may have been born in the United States but....
.....she is not a natural born citizen eligible to be President.
She looks so white. Is she mixed?
India has many hues of coloration. I have Indian friends who look almost Swedish (except for the hair) and others that look like they are from Nigeria.
Many folks from northern, central and western India are “whiter than white”.
She’s a pretty woman, but all that foreign crpp is annoying.
Our Thai relatives yearn for a strong constitutional democracy like Americas’s but have no desire to move here. They have learned the lesson of corruption followed by coup in government and hate it. Thailand is a competitive oligarchy however - what Hillary was embracing with the Clinton Foundation.
Anything but. UN Ambassador is OK. Strategic choice by Trump. Pakistan must be pooping in their breeches.
Interesting. Thanks.
That’s what another guy said, and I believe you both.
But all I’ve ever worked with were dark Indian guys in tech.
Never saw a light one out of dozens.
Is the white area more rural and less apt to end up in a US investment bank?
Since Pakistan seems to be involved in state sponsored terrorist and has provided aid to Al Qaeda, this appointment is appropriate.
And not even Northern India.
Check out Aishwara Rai, who is from southern India (Karnataka).
And China.
I don’t know. But you can find a wide variety of skin tones in India ranging from pretty light to pretty dark.
My God, man! How could you not post a picture? :-)
Yes, the smartest, technical Indians are often the darkest - Tamils, Telugus, Kannadas, high caste Bengalis, a great number of southerners. The exceptions are often Sikhs from the Indian Punjab, like Haley, who are light skinned northerners.
Indian peoples specialize.
And they can surprise. I have met short, dark Sikhs.
That’s nice.
Lot of my family were South Carolina’s original settlers in the Western part of the State. Walked down there from N.C.
Can’t think of any who ended up Governor, although a lot of State reps, sheriffs, Revolutionary War militiamen (Mountaineers), Confederates, and of course more then our share of WWI/WWII/Korea/Vietnam people.
Guess we ain’t as important as the Sacred Sikhs who never saw American shores until the ‘60s. Maybe we should just hand over the country to our Betters.
You lost this argument to history.
