Rather than support Donald Trump in the 2016 election, George W. Bush reportedly left the Select-a-president space blank and voted instead for down-ballot Republicans. And he apparently had company as John McCain, Mitt Romney and W's father, George H.W. also refused to vote for Donald Trump.

But it’s not as though conservatives should be surprised. Because the US counter-attack after 9/11 was mandatory, during 8 years in the Oval Office, George W. managed only 2 estimable acts…those being the nomination of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. And one of these decisions had to be forced upon him as the president had originally nominated his White House council, Harriet Myers, to replace the retiring Sandra Day O’Connor. Thankfully, the resulting outcry was so deafening that Myers withdrew her name from consideration; Alito was then thrust upon W and the rest is history.

Throughout his 2nd term, Bush was mercilessly castigated by the liberal media. Though the unwarranted attacks continued day after day for years, Bush chose to remain above it all by refusing to answer them. Of course, the damage done the Republican Party thanks to Bush’s silence was enormous. But no matter, for W had made the high ground his own. The dope.

The result of this pathetic, silent submission to years of unwarranted abuse was a Democrat blitz in the 2008 election, resulting in sufficient numbers in the United States Senate to ensure the passage of ObamaCare. Thanks a heap, George.

This year, the calculated betrayal of the American people by W and other NeverTrumpers didn’t matter one bit as voters took up the banner from slack-jawed, GOPe politicos...

Aw, layoff of Bush, it’s getting old. We could have had far worse and he was a good and decent man even for his mistakes.

He deserves credit for leaving the Presidency with dignity and for keeping his mouth shut for the most part afterward. If after a few years you can say the same about Obama, then come back and bash Bush some more.

Yeah, that was an unholy alliance. As far as I'm concerned both Bushs squandered opportunities for far greater presidencies—the father with the way he “ended” the Gulf War, and the son with the second term abrogating of his responsibilities to lead. Remember Harriet Myers? That was the last straw for me. The funny thing is that if the GOP had not gone along with the Bush's desire for a third Bush presidency, I honestly think someone other than Donald would have been the candidate, and likely lost. The promotion of Jeb Bush as a possible presidential candidate infuriated those of us already angry about the losers the GOP kept foisting on us. The Bush legacy has been tainted and will not wash clean. For those of you still defending them, keep sticking your head in the sand and you'll see nothing clearly.

I somewhat agree with you, but to be fair, it was GW Bush who brought himself back into the news. He gets to own that.

He was silent for years about Barack Obama, but he found his voice when it came time to oppose his own party’s nominee.

Sorry, but the damage done to the GOP by the Bush family was great (regardless of intent). And there are doubts about their decency, as well. They think they are entitled to the GOP presidential nomination, not unlike the Kennedy and Clinton families in the Democrat party. I'm sure George Jr. had his sights set on that office down the road, but hopefully that dream is now dead. I will never cast another vote for a Bush, and I'm sure millions of others that have in the past won't do so again.

I should be honored for his no child left behind and prescription drug plan. For the nomination of Roberts to the supreme court. The disastrous war in Iraq that continues to cost lives to this day. The idea that pleasing democrats while forsaking your base is the way to govern. Bush is at best a squishy moderate who might be considered a nice guy but was a sorry president. I’m sorry for not being in a generous mood but I just spent the past hour placing flags on the graves of veterans.
