Chris Matthews is asked what working-class voters thinks about Donald Trump and explains the "patriotic feelings" Trump elicits. Matthews said Americans feel that the elites have betrayed the country and the country itself has let them down.
"A lot of this support for Trump with all his flaws which he displays regularly is about the country. Patriotic feelings people have," Matthews said Friday. "They feel the country has been let down. They feel that our elite leaders on issues like immigration, they don't regulate any immigration it seems, they don't regulate trade to our advantage, to the working man's or working woman's advantage, they take us into stupid wars. Their kids don't fight but our kids do. It's patriotic. They believe in their country."
"Hillary is the symbol of the establishment," Matthews described the view of Trump supporters....

I’m not sure what to make of this, except to say that Matthews has been caught in a rare moment of clear, unbiased observation.
I don’t believe for a minute that his ideological center has moved.

Surprisingly good insight from a guy who normally has his head so far up his butt he can see out his belly button. Of course recognizing feelings of patriotism in others is nowhere near to having them himself.

But the reason he was doing this, and that ABC was dutifully reporting on it, was that Johnson was stealing votes from Hillary. They know they need every possible vote and they're pulling out all the stops to push the Hillary cadaver over the line.
And this message is the one Trump has to ride if he wants to get elected.
Hillary = political elites that have betrayed the country.
Trump = the one man left who will oppose them and save the country.
