When Members of Congress Sleep With Lobbyists

In Congress, relatives lobby for bills before family members

In 2007, in the wake of the biggest lobbying scandal in decades, Congress limited the ability of family members to lobby their relatives in the House or Senate. But it declined to ban the practice entirely.

Since then, 56 relatives of lawmakers have been paid to influence Congress. More than 500 firms have spent more than $400 million on lobbying teams that include the relatives of members, according to a Washington Post analysis of disclosure forms.

Not Answering the Caul
National Journal: Hotline Latest Edition (USA) - October 27, 2011

EXCERPT

Cruz “has become a cause célèbre for tea party activists around the country.” But he “does have establishment ties.” Cruz mgr John Drogin is a former staffer to NRSC chair John Cornyn (R). Drogin “is a known quantity” in TX circles, “and his decision to sign on with Cruz gives the campaign credibility” with GOPers in D.C. and Austin. Cornyn “is not getting involved publicly in the primary” ( Livingston, Roll Call, 10/27). Snake Oil

Cruz “has been focusing some of his harshest campaign trail rhetoric on that longtime villain of those suspicious of U.S. internationalism”: The Council on Foreign Relations. During a speech to a GOP women’s group last week, Cruz said the Council on Foreign Relations is “a pit of vipers.” When asked about the Council at another event on Oct. 15, Cruz called the organization “a pernicious nest of snakes” that is “working to undermine our sovereignty,” according to “video provided by someone who opposes his candidacy.”

But Cruz’s wife, Heidi Cruz, “was an active member” of the Council on Foreign Relations until this June. She was a member until June on a 5-year “term membership” program, “an official at the organization confirmed.”

Cruz spokesperson James Bernsen: “It was never the main point of that debate and this race isn’t about the CFR, this race is about who’s going be the best senator from Texas. ...

“HEIDI S. CRUZ is an energy investment banker with Merrill Lynch in Houston, Texas. She served in the Bush White House under Dr. Condoleezza Rice as the Economic Director for the Western Hemisphere at the National Security Council, as the Director of the Latin America Office at the U.S. Treasury Department, and as Special Assistant to Ambassador Robert B. Zoellick, U.S. Trade Representative. Prior to government service, Ms. Cruz was an investment banker with J.P. Morgan in New York City.”

Heidi Cruz tries to rebuild bridges her husband burned on path to White House

Reuters, December 15, 2015

Heidi Cruz, a Harvard Business School graduate and former Bush administration official, has emerged as a central figure in her husband’s campaign, charming on-the-fence donors while acting as a bridge to the Republican establishment.

(snip)

At this stage, Cruz is not tapping her network of Wall Street contacts, nor is she trying to bring around her former colleagues in the Bush administration, where she worked as an aide to then-U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick before joining the staff of the White House National Security Council.

“They know my phone number,” she said. “And when they’re ready, they will call. I’m not going to go twist their arm. And when they come, we will welcome them with open arms.”

This is a powerful article that everyone should see, but when I tried to post it, it was not allowed because of ‘blog pimping’....it’s NOT my blog....

Anyway!

Marine Disfigured by a Bomb Tells Powerful Story at Trump Townhall (Endorses Trump)

During a Fox News GOP presidential debate, a Marine who had been disfigured by a bomb while serving in the military had a chance to tell his story in the spotlight with presidential candidate Donald Trump.

As IJReview reported, Two of Cpl. Porta’s fellow Marines were killed in an IED explosion.

Porta then faced over 100 surgeries at Veterans Administration hospitals. Now he is a spokesman for Veterans for Trump.

All eyes were on Corporal Tony Porta as he told his harrowing story of running up against the VA hospital, and he asked the GOP hopeful what he planned to do about the many problems the VA is facing.

“I am really, really hurt about my two friends,” Porta said, looking Trump in the eye. “But I’m here for a reason. I’m here to fight, I’m here to help my fellow veterans.”

In a powerful moment on camera, the vet describes how he was injured, how he struggled to recover, and how he’s being treated by the VA today.

“I was really struggling. I was in San Antonio for six years, over a hundred surgeries, just to be this way,” Porta said. “I went back home–home wasn’t home anymore.”

Porta described some of the VAs he frequented as “awful,” while giving better marks to a smaller VA he went to later. The Marine vet described waiting for weeks for certain necessary treatments. He also expressed concern for veterans who commit suicide due to PTSD and other struggles.

Trump reiterated his support for veterans and called the VA “corrupt.” The presidential candidate then seemed to suggest private vouchers for veterans who have trouble getting treatment at VAs.

Corporal Porta then closed with a heartfelt appeal to the Republican candidate.

“When you become president, I don’t want you to work for those guys who are giving tons of money to a lot of people,” he said, adding, “I want you to work for us.”

So we are into conspiracy theories now! How about Trump’s holdings abroad; Ivanka Trump clothing line all comes from Asia; Trumps shirts, ties, suits. He himself said H1-B visas are great before he spun it around in under 24-hours.

http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/national/heidi-nelson-cruz-a-political-spouse-making-sacrifices-and-courting-donors/2261719

It did not take long for Heidi Cruz to find her footing. She soon joined Goldman Sachs, where she was early to arrive each day and among the last to leave, impressing her boss at the time, Peter Coneway, who helped recruit her to the firm in 2005 and later recommended her to lead the office.

Coneway recalled Heidi Cruz’s thriving in a region where the money management industry was largely a men’s club.

As she built a network of clients, she found politics to be an icebreaker and her husband a willing partner at dinners with prospective investors. She would call on him to “help make the ask,” she said on a panel at Claremont McKenna in 2011. (Heidi Cruz told the New York Times, though, that she believed in a “separation of church and state” between business and politics and did not ask her clients to donate to the campaigns.)

(snip)

About a week after Texans elected Ted Cruz to the Senate in 2012, Goldman announced Heidi Cruz’s elevation to its ranks of managing directors — a well-deserved promotion, colleagues said.

DIPLOMACY, someone said, is the fine art of allowing others to do things your way. Few progressions through life are as distinguished as that of Houstonian Peter R. Coneway, whom President Bush as appointed U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Coneway, who founded the Houston office of Goldman, Sachs in 1975, leaves for Switzerland this week and soon will present his diplomatic credentials to the leaders of the host countries. He carries with him a long list of personal credentials earned over a lifetime of meritorious service that has made Houston a more livable city.
Like many appointees, Coneway raised campaign funds and garnered political support for the president who appointed him. What sets Coneway apart from some appointees is that he is not a newcomer to public service.
