Cleveland Convention Chaos, Donald Trump and the Rule of Law…
Flopping Aces ^ | 03-09-16 | Vince

Those who say that if Trump has a plurality of the delegates by the time the GOP gets to the convention he should be given the nomination, sound like a vapid Miss America contestant calling for “World Peace”. That’s not to suggest that Trump shouldn’t walk away from the convention with the nomination, but rather simply, that it shouldn’t be his by default.

There’s an easy way for Trump to guarantee that he walks away from the convention with the nomination: Win 50% +1 delegates. It’s actually that simple. As the rules are written, that’s what a candidate needs to secure the nomination. It's said that close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades… and a plurality may be close, but it’s not 50% +1.

If the point is to give the nomination to the guy with the most votes, then why didn’t the rules committee make that the rule? They could have, but they didn’t. So what we have is a scenario where someone could walk into the convention with 49% of the vote and not walk away with the nomination. “Gee, that’s not fair...” So let’s just give it to him! OK, well, then, let’s say instead of 49% he had 36%... do we do the same? How about 29%? Or how about this… we anoint the guy with 26% of the vote over two other guys have 25% each and where 74% of the voters want someone else?

There are endless scenarios that can play out if we simply toss the rules, but the fact of the matter is, the whole point of the multiple ballots at the convention is to create a framework for choosing the nominee when there is no clear winner. That involves horse trading, deal making and different candidates jockeying for position. That might not be as pristine as the newly driven snow, but things rarely are.

This of course creates an opportunity for the despicable GOP establishment to take advantage of the situation and try and foist some failed candidate like Mitt Romney or Jeb Bush on us, but it’s their right to try. It’s just up to the delegates to not let them. If that were to happen there would no doubt be a revolution, but sometimes you can’t save a party from itself any more than you can a person.

What’s not playing by the rules is secret meetings where party elitists plot to defeat the favored candidate. It is not at all comparable to dealings in which the person with the most delegates has great influence over the outcome.

“There’s an easy way for Trump to guarantee that he walks away from the convention with the nomination: Win 50% +1 delegates. It’s actually that simple.”

Exactly.

Tired of all the conspiracy theories. Tired of all the cries “unfair”. Tired of accusations that Cruz is teaming up with GOPe.

There were some here yesterday saying that if Rubio drops out before Florida it would be due to a GOPe conspiracy against Trump. Yet Trump himself called for Rubio to drop out.

In other words, it's their club and if they don't want us to play that's their prerogative. And if it takes changing the rules in midstream to get what they want it isn't our place to object. It isn't "the people's party" or any of that nonsense - it's their private enterprise.

I can tell when I'm unwanted...

Can you imagine the GOPe trying to out-negotiate Trump at a brokered convention!

The needed 1237 is 50%, so the plus 1 is 1238

Trump at 458, needs 780 ... 781 just to be sure

+1

I was just about to post the same thing, that if Cruz has a plurality he should become the nominee. This isn’t about Cruz vs. Trump or anyone else, it is about a corrupt Republican Party that rigs the rules to serve it’s own ends.

Trump is the best hope of blowing up the GOPe, but even if he does not become the nominee or President, this election has drawn a line in the sand, and it is the beginning of the end of the GOPe regardless.

I love this fantasy land the GOPE lives in

Magically at the Convention all the local and state delegates are going to commit poltical suicide by ignoring the voters who sent them there. Instead they are just going to do what the GOPE tells them to do with no thought at all of the consequences for their political careers when they get home.

I believe the convention should restore the 2/3 rule. A nominee with 49.9% opposed is doomed.

And, I would not allow “winner take all” primaries unless “winner” = >50%.

I’m not sure if I understand the issue here. I don’t think Trump or anyone here, supporting Trump, feel that he WON’T have 50% +1 delegates. I haven’t heard Trump or anyone say they expect their guy to win simply because he has the MOST votes. Cruz says he now in favor of a brokered convention. I don’t think that’s for him to decide or have a opening on. If someone doesn’t reach the threshold the first ballot this it I think the second ballot, the delegates are free to vote.

My question is, on the first ballot, do all delegates cast their vote for their guy?

Oh I get it! but rather simply, that it shouldn’t be his by default... Being the Winner means winning by default and not via the voters!

beats me but the guy with the plurality, even 45 percent, should end up the winner unless it’s like 45 to 43.

but a blowout, if it is that, that’s absurd.

“i’m a Cruz guy, (at least until he decided to meet with Bush)”

And Neil Bush, Jeb’s brother, has joined the Cruz campaign. Whole lot of Bush comradely going on there.

I think you have to go thru the motion. If you don’t make it on the first vote, then the outcome can be anything. And that’s happened before, but I hear you. If someone has the majority, you’d think that person should prevail.
