(Vanity) A National Unity Ticket

"These are the times that try men's souls," wrote Thomas Paine.

Surely, we are living in times of similar upheaval.

Just consider: Going from 2008, when the United States first elected Barack Obama, who campaigned simultaneously on "Hope and Change" and "Fundamentally Transforming the United States of America"...to today, when (for a while) the candidates favored by the two parties to run for President, were Jeb Bush, which would have been three members of the Bush family in the Oval Office (move over, Roosevelts; move over, Adams!)...and Hillary Clinton, spouse of the disgraced Bill Clinton.

But this is America: we hate oligarchies: and so, upstarts have arisen, challenging the favorites.

On the Republican side, Jeb Bush has left the race, after burning through some $100 million or more of donor funds; he has been replaced by a lopsided horse race of Donald Trump, a crass real-estate mogul; Ted Cruz, a first-term Senator who has offended the rules of that august body by openly calling his party's Senate Leader a liar; and Marco Rubio, son of immigrants, who reached around the aisle to work towards unprecedented immigration from Central and Latin America.

On the Democrat side, Hillary Clinton remains the front runner; but she is dogged by her husband's sex scandals, fallout from her disastrous tenure as Secretary of State, and scandals over classified information being disseminated (nice verb for a Clinton!) from a private server under her control: in addition, rumors of poor health continue to dog her. She is being challenged by Bernie Sanders, a literal Socialist from lily-white Vermont, who is being championed by disaffected youth rallying to the slogan "Feel the Bern!"

And it seems that nobody, but nobody, is happy. GOP kingmakers openly encourage their party to turn against the front runner; Sanders supporters inveigh against the "rigged" super delegate rules, which all but guarantee the nomination to Clinton regardless of the popular vote.

Is there any way to resolve these dilemmas?

I believe there is: a national unity ticket, saluting the unique American talent for thumbing their nose at traditional authority; and, at the same time, paying proper attention to members of each party who seemingly have been passed over.

May I suggest:

Romney / Gore.

Because it's still THEIR TURN, and they were cheated, Dammit!

How will Trump force them to build the wall?

Trump didn't say he wants Mexico to build the wall. He only said he wants Mexico to pay for the wall.

And that's easily done: Just stop all foreign aid to Mexico, slap on extra fees for Visas for Mexicans visiting the U.S., etc., etc. -- I'm sure other creative ways to shift the cost burden to Mexico so as not to put the burden on the U.S. taxpayer can be found that would be supported by Congress. And Mexico knows it, for all the X-rated bluster of Vincente Fox to the contrary.

It's time to play hard ball. The Donald knows how to do that, thank you very much.

I agree. Trump said he’d have Mexico pay for it. When asked how, he always mentions the 55 billion trade imbalance as the answer. IOW, they do a lot of business that benefits them, so some of that money will be tapped to have them pay for the wall.

So far as a national unity ticket, on the republican side it would be something like Trump/Cruz if he gets this Canadian thing quickly straightened out.
That would unite Trumps moderates and blue collars with Cruz’s very conservatives and evangelicals.

Perhaps Trump/Kasich, although Kasich is sort of slow speed. But it would throw a bone to the establishment and help Ohio go red instead of blue.

In terms of putting some old democrat on the ticket, I think all of the Zell Miller variety are dead and gone. There’s not a single one I would trust any more.
