Last night Texas Senator Ted Cruz won a clear, if small, victory in the Iowa Caucuses. He worked hard and smart to achieve his victory over Donald Trump and Marco Rubio; hats for off to him.
Iowa is a very different place where different elements add up to victory. At this time it is unclear how Cruz did among the Evangelical voters who turned out in large numbers but they were not the only voters to turn out. Clearly he did well enough with other voters to reach his magic number.
Nevertheless, as the Iowa system works the worst news for both Trump and Rubio will merely be the headline showing them finishing second and third because while Cruz got 8 delegates for his win Trump and Rubio both got 7 delegates for finishing second and third. Now the process moves first to New Hampshire a sharply different type of state where Trump holds a large lead over both Cruz and Rubio.
Trumpâs lead is currently larges enough to present a tall order for either or both to overcome and convince voters they deserve to win. The latest average of available polls from New Hampshire, shows Trump with a more than 20 point lead over both men. Can either or both close and beat out Trump in the Granite State? Stranger things have happened but that likelihood is not very great.
Trump ... has amassed a huge fortune during a lifetime of ups and downs. He has apparently been very good at learning from mistakes. He didnât make too many in Iowa and finished with one delegate less than Cruz.
".. he is a quick study as shown by his ability to come so close on his first try; and a 20 point cushion to enter round two with.

What surprises me is that those Iowa voters weren’t turned off by the “shaming” scandal. I’m wondering how that invasion of privacy is sitting with New England voters.
Hopefully Trump will win NH..
Trump and Cruz must crowd out Rubio soonest...
I am not a Trump supporter, with that said, I will say that Trump’s coming in 2nd speech was the type of thing that will garner him votes. Humble, positive and delivered with style, it was a far cry from what the media has been blasting across the airwaves for months when the Donald speaks.
Last poll out of New Hampshire has Trump by 26% over Cruz.
Sort of puts Iowa in perspective.
yep.
Congrats to Cruz.
I would think Trump would win NH but “smart” is not a description of his political acumen at this point. Missing the debate, pathetic ground game and not spending his own money in the Iowa market were naive. He may be smart but he hasn’t shown it yet.
I don’t believe Trump has ever been behind in New Hampshire in any poll since he announced. Always ahead at least in the last 6 months.
You do realize that any pre-Iowa poll in NH is largely useless, right? The narratives have changed and many voters will take a second look at the candidates, likely mentally shrinking the field based on those who did horribly in Iowa (e.g., Bush, Kasich... possible exception is Christie, who clearly blew off Iowa for NH).
Now, if the polls coming out by the weekend, which would include sampling dates from today on, still show Trump with a huge lead, then he's probably going to win NH, despite his lack of on-the-ground organization. If they show the race significantly tightening, then that ground game difference might really matter.
>> What surprises me is that those Iowa voters werenât turned off by the âshamingâ scandal.
The simplest explanation is that they saw it for the nothing-burger that it is.
Hey, maybe they even agreed with it. Get off your teevee watching butts and participate in your political process, America!
And how can something that is public information be construed as an “invasion of privacy”? Still waiting for that to be explained to me.
New Hampshirites never seem to care what the caucus results are in Iowa nor should they.
Don’t congratulate Cruz. He put out an ad that had Trump bulldozing down a widow’s house, never happened. He and Rush pushed the Trumpcare crap last few days which is an outright lie.
Dems crossed over to vote Cruz and stop Trump and the Cruz people told caucuses that Carson had dropped out to get those votes.
No congrats due.
This place is WAAAAAY out of his wheelhouse.
Trump didn’t want to spend his $$ in Iowa. He wasn’t all in on the state that is obvious. Why would he be, Iowa isn’t anything notable except the first state.
He ran to win in Iowa in a national sense. It got him 2nd place and almost the same amount of delegates of the other top three guys.
We’ll see what happens in NH and SC. If Trump doen’t spend in those places and put together a ground game then yes we can say his effort is poor. But based on Iowa? Nahhh.
Trump has Sara Palin. That didn´t work out very well in Iowa. I sense the troops of Cruz have been energized, and the folks in N.H, will see through the hot air of Trump, notice he never talks about HIS RECORD: WHEN my dear, has he done anything in his history to help a conservative be elected. Dah...
If Donald realizes that it is time to tone down insults which are offensive to many Evangelicals, get substantive to bring in on the fencers of both parties, explain his changes and humanize himself and explain how populism is true conservatisim he can win. Keep going as is is starting to wear thin.
