USA Today reports on the growing consensus across the political spectrum â from the Obama administration to the Koch brothers â that many occupational licensing laws are unnecessary obstacles to employment and do not provide any real benefit to public safety.
The article featured a chart based on survey data showing the share of state workforces that are licensed. Michigan borders three states that all have a lower portion of their population licensed.
So the question is: Do you feel endangered when visiting Indiana, Ohio or Wisconsin? Each state has fewer licensing requirements than Michigan, so if licensing laws really did improve public safety, you should feel more at risk. Of course, thereâs no evidence that you are actually less safe in these states.
According to a newly updated report from the Institute for Justice, âLicense to Work,â the burdens of licensing requirements in Michigan are among the highest in the Midwest.
Licensing laws typically get and stay enacted because special-interest groups argue they are necessary for public health and safety. But policymakers rarely test these claims when passing new regulations. Instead, occupational licensure protects existing practitioners and businesses from competition and unnecessarily prevents others from using their talents to make a living. This, of course, disproportionately harms people with low incomes and limited job skills. If Michigan policymakers want to help those with the most needs, they should start by removing barriers that prevent them from using their talents to earn a living.
Life is good however but IMO 0bama is hell spawn made popular by misguided miscreants..
It depends on the state, city, and area of city whether or not I feel endangered. I take appropriate precautions.
What are they talking about? Hairdressers, car mechanics, various service people who are in licensed professions?
Do they also mean doctors lawyers and CPAs?
In California - yes. We don't go as often now.
Much of the licensing is a combination of money for the state and a protection racket for the licensees.
When I travel to cities led by Democrats or are majority black do I fear my safety. Memphis and Jackson, Tennessee, and Jackson, Mississippi, are the nearest hell holes to me and I stay away from them unless I absolutely have to travel to those cities.

I’m a Professional Engineer. State Engineering boards are the most shiftless, lazy group. Their sole purpose is to harvest license fees from people like me that are registered in multiple states. They don’t care about the profession, they care about bogus “continuing education” under-the-table deals and with getting paid for doing little.
I don’t have a problem with licensure requirements, you can make an argument for it for a lot reasons - some good, some spurious.
BUT....it should be accepted in any state.
To do this, state licensing boards would have to harmonize requirements and licensing (and disciplinary actions). That sounds like work, so I don’t see it happening.
I regard Nevada’s nearby border with California as ‘Checkpoint Charlie’ leading into Soviet-era East Germany, if that answers any questions.
I’m surprised there’s still a pleasant looking ‘Welcome to California!’ sign there with a picture of their Golden Poppy state flower on it instead of a big white sign with red stenciled Cyrillic letters reading ‘STOK!’ in front of T-62 tanks, high fences with razor wire, barking German Shepherds, and searchlights scanning the area. What they do have is the California Highway Patrol laying in wait in little camouflaged cutouts along the highway.
I rarely go into California, but when I do I can tell you that passing the ‘Welcome to Nevada’ sign showing the old gold prospector panning in the stream is the best part of the trip.
I like crossing the border from Nevada into Arizona. It’s like leaving America and traveling into Even More America.
It’s just that windy ten mile stretch over the Pat Tillman bridge at Hoover Dam that makes me nervous when towing a trailer. Otherwise, it’s all fine from Vegas to Phoenix down the new 93. Nice country.
In WV they are talking about a $330 million dollar short fall for next fiscal year due in large part to decreases in severance taxes from coal. Obama’s war on coal is having a huge impact on citizens in coal producing states. We will most likely pay higher taxes to make up some of the difference as a result. He is literally taking food from people’s tables.
Out of state? I feel endangered when I leave the house!
I have problems going between my office and my parking garage, especially at night.
I feel endangered when I drive out of my driveway.
I really really despise getting stopped going across the border because of the fruit nazi’s. I go the store and much of it this time of year comes from CA. But no, go to the state then try and sneak back across with a bag of grapes... Dang blasted Agri-nazi’s.
I didn’t know this before but just found out a few months ato...
The agro-nazis at the border stop ask me about machinery I manufacture. They wanted lading documents, receipts, contact info, registration and serial numbers of the machine I built. I was delivering it to a company in Northern California and the machine had ZERO to do with agriculture.
If it wasn’t a customer’s product I would have told that a-hole to shove it and turned around.
They aren’t looking for fruit anymore.
I was going to say similar about Nevada. They still appreciate freedom in those parts.
My daughter is a hairdresser and is licensed in three states.
LOL, only when I go to Arkansas with a license plate on the front from Missouri. Had a guy in a big pick up play chicken with me on a back road on the way home after driving through the beautiful mountains. I was in a little Saturn. My kid was in the back seat. There was only a little shoulder to my right and then a ditch. Creep.
Good thing he didn’t know I was born in the Bronx or God knows what he would have done.
