10 things everyone will be Looking for when SHTF Hits

Many survival preppers talk about stashing their cache supplies and its content. But, not much is talked about other things to look for or have in their cache that doesn't fall under food and water. Here 10 that you may have overlooked.

1. Heirlooms Seeds - For the uninitiated, heirloom seeds are ones that are a true strain. Meaning, if you grow a watermelon from an heirloom seed, the seeds found in the ripe melon can be planted the next season and will, theoretically at least, grow just fine.

2. Greenhouse Supplies - Even a very basic hoop house covered in plastic will greatly extend the growing season. You can find plans online for several different types of DIY greenhouses.

3. Fire Extinguishers - When all fire-fighting duties fall on you and your family, you'll certainly appreciate the addition of at least a few decent fire extinguishers.

4. Wagons - Whether it is a robust model like you’d find at a garden center or just an old Radio Flyer, wagons are excellent back savers.

5. Feminine Hygiene and Health Products - Many if not most preppers will think to stock up on things like pads and tampons, especially if there's a female involved with the prepping.

6. Sewing Supplies - If traveling down to the local discount retailer to pick up new duds becomes no longer an option, having at least needles, thread, and some patches will extend the life of your clothes. Read the rest of the story here.

Oh yeah and the movie? There’s a little bit of “girl power” kind of stuff I guess with the female heroine but not any heavy handed feminism in it. The worst is probably when the female heroine finally gets back to her “tribe”, who turn out to be a bunch of fossils that look like a geriatric lesbian biker gang with hippy dippy names.

However, it’s still the best action movie that’s been made in the last decade at least. Definitely the best Mad Max movie besides the Road Warrior.

I’m more RPG than action but I might give it a go.

Just imagine the folks who will freak when their cell phones don’t work.

If you can’t learn the skills now, print out how-tos so you’ll have them in hard copy.

Really? I heard it was drowned in PC crap. Might have to give it a look too then. I’m a big MM fan but I have an aversion to modern takes on original greats. And what I heard didn’t make me haZ fuzzies.

I joke that the apocalypse is no issue since people can just call out for Pizza. But we are so devolved as a species most people will try doing exactly that. With no idea at all why the cell and net are down.

Followed by frantic ‘call’ attempts to tech support and threat of lawsuit to the cell company..

I bought something that is supposed to be useful for fire-starting.

We haven’t used it yet, and I hope that we never need it, but if we do...

Good for you! Old school is the best.

I should probably get some old-fashioned cooking matches. We had tons of them when we were camping.

I figure it’s one less thing to carry and a knife and your shoelace are standard anyway and dry sticks arent had to find.

People should absolutely learn that trick even if they buy kits and such.

Shoes should be on the list. Keeping your feet dry is crucial. An extra pair of shoes could be very important, especially since a lot of walking is probably going to be necessary. Then again, maybe I’m overthinking this.

Well, like I said, there’s a little bit of it in there, but not so much that I was very distracted from the movie. For example, the notion that a skinny woman is going to be basically a general in a marauder gang is ridiculous, but there is so much other ridiculously crazy stuff in the story, it’s hard to get upset about only that unless you are really trying to find fault with it.

If you liked the chase scene in the 2nd half of Road Warrior, the new movie is basically that for 2 hours, with slicker action and visuals, and just a few slow moments in between. Also, you get a more detailed depiction of things from the marauder’s side, which we didn’t get much of in the previous films. You see they have a whole society with a caste system, religion, rituals, etc, and get to know a few of the “bad guys” more personally, so they aren’t just cartoon villains in football pads anymore.

Any advice on a good weapon for an inexperienced rural woman who needs to protect her family and hunt for food?

I’ve gotten gas to last over 10 years. It was put into storage in 1999 and preserved with an additive. About 25% of it evaporated out as the storage drums had to be vented.

It was put into a 1958 John Deere 440 gas tractor whose hydraulics were married to a log splitter. The tractor was very hard to start, and ran very poor.

I took the old gas and mixed it 50 50 with new gas, then the tractor started fairly easy and got up to full rpm and power.

I had about 30 gallons of the stuff, and ended up splitting several cords of wood with it.

I would not trust outdated gas in a modern vehicle.

Good question. A rifle of some type. :) We’re looking into that as well, so I’m interested too.
