RedState's own Leon Wolf did a great job exposing the Politico story about Ben Carson and West Point as a lie. Washington Post reporter Dave Weigel is also churning out great information on Twitter regarding the story.
I want to focus on what Donald Trump is doing with the story, however.
Yesterday, November 5, Donald Trump had this to say about Politico:
Look, Politico is so dishonest in so many different things. This Politico website or whatever the hell they call it, I mean, they write about me. We don't deal with them anymore because the level of dishonesty is incredible.
Today, November 6, Donald Trump is spreading the false Politico story about Ben Carson. Below is one of the several Trump Tweets citing the Politico piece.
What an incredible turnaround. It appears Trump is willing to do whatever it takes to destroy Carson, who is poised to disrupt his position as GOP frontrunner.
Yesterday, Trump seized on the silly CNN investigation of Carson's childhood. According to Trump, Carson's childhood might be a "total fabrication.?
Ironically, much of Trump's support is due to the perception that he tells the truth and shuns the mainstream media. It is now clear that he will abandon that notion when it suits him politically.

David French: “[Carson’s] account, in fact, resonates with my own experience. Many years ago I was “offered” an ROTC scholarship before I even applied. After speaking with officers familiar with my academic record, they told me I would receive a full academic scholarship, and that the application was a mere formality. My teenage self certainly took their statements as an “offer,” and I wouldn’t have applied without their word. (I filled out the forms and was formally accepted, but declined in favor of a better scholarship elsewhere.)....
Rush and Co are the modern Chad checkers. They determined the ‘intent’ of what he wrote. I listened to him today. It was pathetic.
I would think a brain surgeon has the intelligence to choose his words as he wishes them used. But obviously everyone knows what he meant except Carson himself.
Lets make that guy President! He can misspeak like the Pope and Obama!
No, he was not...
He was at the time the top ROTC grad, and that brings with it a offer to make a ROTC endorsed request for nomination.
Like any other school, West Point recruiting often terms the appointment as a scholarship, because it is...and it includes a stipend.
There is no foul by Carson to have termed it in that way.
He turned that offer down and never applied for the nomination.
There is no deception here.

After discussing the issue with @bradplumer @mattyglesias, it’s clear that Civilization II proves Ben Carson’s pyramid/grain theory.

Not all pyramids were built to store grain but there is archeological evidence to prove that some of the early ones were. There is also validity to the Joseph claim. But like all things archeological there are opposing views.
You realize he's joking? Civilization II refers to a video game I believe.
The pyramids were built 2,500 years before Joseph came around. It also contradicts the scripture which simply states that the grain was stored in each city. Where would you even put the grain in the pyramids?
Well, formally: Yes, it was not 100% accurate - insofar as he did not employ the correct terminology.
But people frequently employ incorrect terminology without being called "liars."
"Full scholarship," "stipend," "fast-track entry," "entrance with advanced standing," "preferred housing," "bypassing the usual, arduous interview process," "gilt-edged recommendation," "mulligan" - or whatever other words were used in making Carson that "offer" decades ago - I think that it is mighty small of people today to invoke the "L-word" with regards to Carson.
Regards,
Quite a few FReepers swallowed the Politico lie as well, and then happily danced around the Carson campaign funeral pyre.
Trump should have held back for a while on the Twitter attack to be sure who, in fact, was lying.
Twitter can be a useful tool, but you have to be careful what you say there, as in any other venue.
The difference is West Point does not “offer” a scholarship upfront.
It is different from all other institutions in that respect.
No one is “offered” a scholarship to West Point.
Yet Carson in his book says he was offered a scholarship to West
Point. That is an untrue statement in Carson’s book.
My brother applied, Was nominated by a U.S. Senator and earned an
an appointment to West Point. He was never “offered” a scholarship
to West Point because there is no such thing.
Well, Michael Jackson had to do the “Bad” video to get some “street cred”.
Thre is a difference in saying he was encouraged to apply for a “scholarship” and that he was “offered” a scholarship.
Big difference in “ encouraged” and “offered”.
Carson said in his book that he was “offered” a scholarship.
And that is an untrue statement on how one enters West Point.
Yes it does.
OK.....I am really getting tired of this....It’s not my writing, I am not a archeologist but I can tell you that there is a valid argument that the timeline for Egypt is in error and that if corrected it all makes sense.
The grain thing has to do with a number of pyramids, at least one of which was later converted to a tomb, but the grain storage areas were still identifiable..
If you rationally look at what a pyramid is, you will see that it is but a large building constructed in a style that evolved over a period of time but can be seen in many parts of the world. A big building is what you might use to store a large amount of grain. The theory is that they were developed for both purposes...and maybe others as in multipurpose building..
As compared to what?
A celebrity candidate?
This is the “new and improved” social media election.
What’s your beef?
Then Carson in his book should have said he was “encouraged” to apply.
Instead he says he was “offered” a scholarship to West Point.
Big difference.
No one, including Carson is “offered” a scholarship to West Point.
So, it is an untrue statement by Carson in his book, Gifted Hands.
By design or by accident. It is untrue.
Here is one such article among many if you do a search past the carson attack stories and back into the archeology discussions.
Might need to go back 10 pages or so...the attacks have been prolific.

There is a number of investigative pieces on Netflix that deal with the time lines..
Congratulations to your brother for his West Point nomination.
However, your insistence on focusing on semantics in light of all the empirical evidence that supports Carson’s understanding of the “offer,” begs the question, have parsed Trump so closely and critically?
Nope. You have never gotten over Walker’s being forced out of the race. Your posts where the 2016 race is considered remain a litany of anger and negativity.
Hey Norm.
If he had written in his book that he was “encouraged” to apply.
That could be a credible statement.
However, saying he was “offered” is an untrue statement by Carson.
No one is “offered” a scholarship to West Point. Period.
