If you live in or near a nuclear target area then learn when to evacuate.
The nuclear targets map shown bellow is based on a number of factors like military installations, nuclear weapons storage and silo locations, bases, cities, etc.. No doubt there are not all of them, as well as other probable strategic locations, but it’s simply food-for-thought.
The primary targets will likely be military installations, while a secondary wave will broaden in scope. A third wave would likely involve strategic bombers mopping up what’s left and probably big cities. The first and second wave could be all over in minutes to an hour.

Iran keeps threatening 5 or 6 cities (for their first attack). This is the additional and apparently much more immediate nuke bombing threat that O is creating for America, over and above anything China or Russia might represent. Therefore, it would be helpful if these cities were shown in brighter color on the death map.
(NYCity, WashDC, SF, LA, Chicago, and I think it was either Boston or Houston, sorry can’t remember)

comment: if we can convince the Iranians to move a couple of their targets just a bit, move NYC to Newark, move SF to Oakland, leave WashDC alone, etc.....
then O will be able to proclaim the bombings a grand success for his new Expedited Urban Renewal Program
I strongly doubt there will be a nuclear bombardment of the type envisioned in this map. I think it’s much more likely that Iran will finally get that bomb (or several) and use it/them to create an EMP that will throw us back to the 1800s. (Remember, they LIKE it in the past!!) Recommended reading: “One Second After” and “Pulling Through.”
I’m certainly not an expert on the matter, but I suspect a mass missile attack by Russia is a pretty remote possibility. I would hope they still fear a MAD-level response.
Hard to imagine China attacking us as long as we’re a primary crap customer of theirs. OTOH, they could take a few hits and shrug off the population loss if we even bothered to retaliate.
But I suspect we’ll see a nuclear attack on an American city in my lifetime. Probably just one, or a handful, and likely one of the coasts. I would guess ground based (smuggled) or ship based (short range missile or maybe even detonated in a port).

The Russians and the U.S. to a much lesser extent these days still have strategic bombers. The missiles and SLBMs go in first for the high value targets and the bombers strike the secondary and follow-up targets. That map is not new and it has never been just military targets. Infrastructure, strategic resources, power, communications hubs as well as economic hubs have always been on the list.
There used to be supposedly “safe” relocation and recovery areas for reconstitution of military forces and civilian authority but how safe they really were was very much open to conjecture since any plan is null and void when the first enemy missile launches.
How much of the old standard planning is still in place in one form or another is questionable since SAC went away and subsequent administrations have wreaked their havoc.
Bottom line, the first inkling you have that a nuclear attack is imminent is a day or a week too late. When you hear the warning or look up and see the trails of the MIRVs, say a prayer, bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.
Anyone looking to occupy would make a few major strikes, and wait for the fallout and the left over folks to do the rest. Widespread destruction of infrastructure would be counterproductive.
However, a widespread 'loss of civility' among survivors would thin the herd and expend munitions and resources among those most likely to resist invasion, and those who survived that might be more inclined to surrender to anyone who promised them food and medical care.
I think oil pipeline hubs might be on a newer map, with major power grid intersections, and some road and rail.
Reality is that significant EMPs could stop most transport in its tracks. Hopefully for those near rail lines, all the old tank (steam) engines haven't been scrapped. I don't see the Diesel/Electrics lasting through that sort of zot.
If the objective is terror and collapsing world financial institutions, I expect the bombs would go where they cause the most horror and confusion and the least severe damage. Panicked people would account for the rest.
Americans have been candy-assed enough that they might be slow to respond with nuclear assets, and might not even have a distinct strategic target to fire upon. The ensuing power play might conclude with the missiles still in the silos and the bombs still in the magazines.
I wonder where my state Hawaii fits in there?
It used to be a rule of thumb that it would be about 23 minutes from launch to first detonation, depending on your geographic location.
We used to joke that the first to know would be a particular farmer in North Dakota whose living room window looked out on the missile launch facility on a patch of land he rented to the AF. He’d see and hear one of the first MMIIIs that would leave the hole. I think it was in Delta flight, but it’s been a long time.
I may have to expand my nutritional base.

I knew Columbus, OH would be a target. It’s a major supply distribution hub. While I’m far enough from the city to survive the initial strike, even if it’s in the megaton range, there’s quite a few targets to the south and west where fallout is probably going to get me.

One clue may be a stream of fire trucks, ambulances filled with hospital staff, and police cars escorting limos out of the city. I suspect that if they get warning they’ll scoot first responders and “leaders” out of the 50% circle before they warn civilians (who would instantly block all roads). That way they can respond after the hit.

The map doesn’t show targets in central or west Kansas.
Guess the Cold War joke was true after all:
“In case of World War III, evacuate to Kansas because the Soviets will never bomb the wheat!”
Just bring leather jumpsuits and lunch boxes. Sarah’s vault runs long and deep but she seems to be out of the essentials.
The map only shows targets for smaller warheads.
Agricultural targets get the big boys.
Impact points for the big boys are hard to predict because where they would go would be determined by the prevailing wind at the time of launch.
