Vanity post here, which I rarely do...
Who is going to Sturgis this year?
With well over a million attendees expected in Sturgis this year for the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Rally, I can only imagine there will be a number of Freepers present.
I'd like to commence a thread for this, and facilitate some in person meetings. It would be a pleasure.
Finding lodging or waiting for dozens of moto-cyclists at the pitstops would have been a bit dicey for us, travling by car.
When we got to the Hampton Inn in Orem, Utah, I'd guess that half the rooms were taken by those headed to Sturgis.
Depends on when everyone gets out of jail in Waco.
Not ME I in the United States Navy had enough of DRUNKS for the rest of my life!
IBTBAS crowd.
I was there a couple of weeks ago. It was already getting crowded. That entire region will be in biker gridlock in about a week.
I was getting ready to build a project in Gillette in the 70s. Driving across South Dakota I saw a Harley go by with a topless girl on the back.
This was still 300 miles out from the rally but that was my introduction to what Sturgis was like.
Where is it? When is it?
A few tips for those who might be new to the hills.
1. The roads in the National Forest and Custer State Park can be fun but they are tricky and can be dangerous.
2. Don't scare the buffalo!
3. We do have mountain lions, be careful where you take your comfort breaks.
4. Traffic can be congested in the parks and is a little heavier in town than normal, but people out here are used to it, so relax! Everyone will get where they are going eventually.
5. Rapid City has according to NOAA, has the most unpredictable weather in the country. So be prepared. Also bring a helmet. The hail can be painful and deadly!
6. If you don't like the weather where you are standing, ride in a different direction for 20 minutes. Might be sunny there. :)
I have a forum buddy who recently moved to a place about 15 miles south of Sturgis. Will be interesting to hear what he has to say.
—as I live in Deadwood in the summer, will be exposed to the rally and probably go over a day or two—finding anybody in the crowd doubtful-—but I’ll try if the timing is right-—
Make sure you don’t wear a vest!
Wow. Impressive band lineup.
Recently stayed at a nice B&B in Spearfish owned by some bike fans. They were not yet full for rally week when we were there in mid June. Worth checking out..they may have space for campers too.
I’ll be tenting it near the Full Throttle Saloon. Really looking forward to it.
RT: I’ll send you a private reply.
