Coming To America: The Hoarding Begins: (Shortened)Collapse
SHTF Plan ^ | 6/30/15 | Mac Slavo

It was a seemingly normal Sunday — except it was anything but normal.

For many people in Athens, it was time to prepare for an approaching storm. A short walk from Plaka, a line of people waited to withdraw cash from an A.T.M., hours before the official announcement that banks would be closed starting on Monday. Some bank machines in central Athens had run out of money or were out of service, as screens blamed “technical difficulties.”

Elsewhere, some people had started hoarding gasoline and groceries. “We don’t know what the new day will bring,” said Katerina Vorreadi, who was among a group of retirees waiting in line outside the National Bank of Greece on Saturday night.

The latest, my AC went out last Thursday, and it's 104 outside...

Do you live in an area that sees humidity above 45-50% during the summer days? If not, consider switching to an evaporative cooler. MasterCool makes a really good one. Of course, your house has to be set up for it, so the initial install may not be cheap, but the operation and maintenance is far cheaper than refrigerated air.

buying a shed for our mower that turns out was advertised incorrectly and the door opening isn’t wide enough for our mower to fit through

Just out of curiosity, can you pivot your mower to get it inside? That is, pull in at an angle to get one side of the mower deck in, then turn tight, and get that same side far enough over behind the door to get the remaining side in? Or back in and lift/pivot the body through?

Here's a link where folks discuss this issue - http://www.lawnsite.com/archive/index.php/t-204416.html

NOT in the standard plastic 5 gallon gas containers. We’ve had 3 of them split at the seam and leak over the last 6 years.

Spend the money ($20 - $35) on some racing fuel containers. They hold 5, 7.5 or 10 gallons, sit upright, and are made for being hauled around in trailers and the like. They are far more durable than the crap sold in normal stores. Plus they don't have crappy anti-spill stuff on them that makes it harder to pour and easier to spill.

To each his own but spending that much to store only 30 gallons of fuel is pissing in the wind IMO.

To store only 60 gals, only 5 gal more than a 55 gal drum, you would have to spend double.

Spending money to buy another pump for every storage container is no different than buying a different funnel for every 5 gal container.

Doesn’t make sense to me.

Why waste the money on another pump just to pump a different 30 gal.

You can get a 100 gal tank and a single pump for about the same price as your 60 gal storage.

If you can’t move a 55 gal drum by tilting it and rolling it on it’s edge then you can buy a used hand cart for about $25.

Remember the ant and the grasshopper?

Well, in one version the grasshopper doesn’t die,
but has to sing for his supper in the ant hill all winter.

Just sayin’. You might be worth keeping around for the entertainment value.

It’s a zero turn with a 5’ deck. If I’m understanding the link they are talking about walk behinds? I never did see any pics or video demonstration, so maybe I’m not fully understanding.

“The latest, my AC went out last Thursday, and it’s 104 outside...”

Bummer!

We have to wait a week to get ours fixed. Luckily we are having a cool spell, highs from 77-81 all week. With humidity.

I assume with temps of 104 you have low humidity?

I thought evaporative coolers worked with really low humidity, not higher than 25%?

Anyway, we had two ducting systems for A/C and wvap - the evap needs large ducts for a bigger volume of air.

It’s a zero turn with a 5’ deck.

With it being a zero turn, these things will pivot nice and sharp. Can you pull up to the door somewhat sideways, maneuver one side of the deck through the door, pivot a bit, and get the other side through?

For example you pull up with the left side of the mower to the door, turn left enough to get the left end of the deck to cross the threshold, pull forward to straighten out, back up and put the back corner where the deck meets the chassis against the door jamb, then slowly pivot the rest through the door?

30 gallons is better than no gallons. I wish I had a better place to store the 30 gallons because it makes me nervous sometimes having just that much in an attached garage and I sure ain’t going to store 100 gallons there.

We get more than that here, and they still work (Albuquerque metro area). There's an index of temp and humidity where they lose efficiency. At 102 degrees, and up to about 30% humidity, they'll produce air temps below 80 degrees - which is a whole lot better than nothing. We're hitting mid-90s to low 100s here in the Albuquerque area, and going into monsoon season, where the humidity goes high enough (50-60% or more) that the swamp coolers start to lose efficiency.

There are indexes out there that show the temp of the air put out by the swamp cooler based on temp/humidity levels, and some coolers (MasterCool) are definitely better than others. There are also two-stage coolers that work much better in higher temp areas, they pre-cool the air before it enters the cooler, and also produce less humid air in the cooling process, so they will work in somewhat higher humidity areas.

Tell that to my empty bed (going on 4 years now) (but I think it’s my choice) (I’m sick of all the baggage and crap that surrounds a woman) (I prefer cats) (except my little girl cat who gets into everything, goes into the garbage, goes on the counter to steal chicken, tears open kitty-treat bags) (but then again it’s a female so there’s the baggage and crap I was talking about) (see I know what I know and you know that I know)

Get a used 35 gal drum and a cheap piston pump if you just have to have a pump.

That pump on that 30 gal transfer tank is probably about a $90 pump.

I don’t know where your from but where I’m from spending $90 to pump 30 gal is a waste of money.

They may call that tank a storage tank but it’s actually a transfer tank intended to transfer fuel from your main tank which is generally kept outside to inside where you need small amounts.

Transfer tanks are more dangerous inside a closed building than a sealed drum because they are designed to vent fumes, a sealed drum wont vent fumes.

Little advice, take it or leave it.

If your gone from your house for a few days you’d be well advised to move that transfer tank outside or you might not have a house when you come back.
