Its been three years since Sybrina Fultons son was shot and killed by a vigilante neighbor in Florida. Now, she says, after seeing whats happened to other young black unarmed men, its never been clearer that Trayvons skin color led to him being profiled and killed.
It was not about that hoodie, and I need to tell you that, Fulton told a standing room only crowd in Los Angeles on Wednesday. It was absolutely about the color of his skin.
Fulton, who became an activist against gun violence after Trayvon Martins death in 2012, spoke during a discussion hosted by Manifest Justice, a week-long art exhibition centered around justice. The line of 1,000 people waiting to hear Fulton speak went around the block, with some people standing up to two hours in line on an unusually cold day.
Its about admitting when we have a problem, Fulton told the crowd. Collectively, we have a problem that we need to fix. Its time to stop pretending we dont have an issue.
My son is not here to speak for himself. I am Trayvon Martin, she said.
Through her Trayvon Martin Foundation, Fulton works with other mothers who have lost their sons to senseless gun violence, helping them to heal and training them to become advocates in their own communities to end gun violence. Martins father, Tracy Martin, has a similar program working with fathers who have lost sons to gun violence.
She has also spoken out about stand your ground laws, the state-level laws that allow a person to use deadly force in self-defense. George Zimmerman, the man who killed her son, told a courtroom he shot Martin because he feared for his own life.
Prior to this happening to my son I didnt know anything about stand your ground, and I think people are more aware of these types of laws and racial profiling and the disparities we have here in the United States, told Fusion before the discussion, which was moderated by actress Rosario Dawson.
I just think its unfortunate that a person has to lose their life in order for us to uncover certain things, she said.
The event was co-hosted with the human rights group Amnesty Internationals Art for Amnesty initiative, which uses art to call attention to social issues, and the California Endowment, a foundation that provides grants to community groups throughout the state.
Fulton still resides in Miami Gardens, where Trayvon Martin went to high school. She says the community has supported the family through this journey, though she said shes most often stopped by people who recognize her when shes traveling through airports.
I grew up in the area and people know I havent changed any. Its just the work that I do in the community thats changed, she said.
Yes we do. We have 3% of the population committing 75% of all us violent crime/murders. They happen to be just like Trayvon.

Zimmerman should sue for libel.
I stopped reading at vigilante.
‘Collectively, we have a problem that we need to fix. Its time to stop pretending we dont have an issue.’
No, YOU all have a problem and an issue. Stop letting gangs raise your kids to live like animals with no self-respect, no respect for others, no work ethic, no manners, no desire for a job, a future, a family, a life - and maybe that problem will go away. YOU all need to stop the blame game and assume responsibility for your kids.
We can’t solve that for you. No amount of free sh*t will solve that problem. You’re going to have to make an effort. I really hope you figure this out. Killing cops won’t solve the problem either!
She was already beating other family members over money from what I read in the press.
Now this BS for attention and the hope of money IMO.
Your problem became George’s problem. Solved.
Trayvon was killed because he was a thug who had no common sense or self control. Attack a man and try to beat him to death and you deserve to get shot.
I am getting so sick of excuses when black “Yutes” self-select for the Darwin Award and are consequently presented with it. Don’t want a Darwin Award, don’t ask for it by trying to murder someone by taking him down and attempting to bash his scull into a concrete sidewalk...he just might be armed. The good news is that Trayvon will not be reproducing.
Big egos, little self control and no respect for authority gets them in constant trouble.
Oops, you said the “T” word. Don’t you know that’s like calling someone a...never mind.
Not my rules so I don’t play by them.
Its about admitting when we have a problem, Fulton told the crowd. Collectively, we have a problem that we need to fix. Its time to stop pretending we dont have an issue.-—It’s the skittles, is it the skittles? I say it’s the skittles.
And WHERE was Trayvon's dad?
Any man worth his salt will teach his son right from wrong.
Ass whippings should at times be employed if necessary.
Ghetto moms generally DON'T "scare" young males.
But a ghetto real "dad" will tell and show his son how to be a decent grown man.
And it involves discipline.
I'm glad that Baltimore mom went after her stupid son.
But it would have been MUCH more effective if his father did.
It was absolutely about the color of Zimmerman's skin - it was black and blue from having his head pounded into the concrete when your son tried to kill him.
Now, she says, after seeing whats happened to other young black unarmed men, its never been clearer that Trayvons skin color led to him being profiled and killed.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Buahahahahahahahahaha!
Her son was a violent punk.He assaulted and was met with a citizen who exercised his constitutional right of self defence.
Simple. Tray gets the Darwin award.

I agree, we sure do have a problem. Look in the mirror, and you will see it miss Martin.
That’s right, never let the enemy make the rules!
