Dr. Peter Pry (Executive Director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security) warns that the consequences - of not being prepared for this event - are much more severe than one may think:

Former CIA double agent (Reza Kahlili) who spent time in the Iranian Army confirmed that the Iranian have conducted missile tests of ships in the Caspian See that are consistent with an EMP attack:
“They are going to get to the Gulf of Mexico with ballistic missiles and they can launch one at a moment’s notice and they wouldn’t care about the repercussions”
Mostly because they can sink the vessel leaving no traces and because the US won’t be able to retaliate!
What if you woke up one morning and nothing worked? What if there was no electricity? What if all transportation came to a halt?
An EMP event would instantly destroy any means of telecommunication, bank account would disappear, planes would fall from the skies, nuclear plants would not be able to cool down the reactors, we would have no running water (water pumps) and every piece of electronics we use from pacemakers to phones to gasoline pumps would stop!
Your refrigerator will stop working and all your food will spoil in a matter of days! If you and your family are not together, you won’t be able to contact or see them.
This is a catastrophic threat and North Korea, China, Iran, Russia and even ISIS… they all understand it and they are all working on it.

No one has devised a means of controlling the parameters of an EMP attack. Now locally shot, that’s one thing, but continent wide that is something else. Secondly subs would be immune as would our ships not docked in the conus. Our ships and assets at the coast line may not be affected So an unfriendly would have to shoot three or 4 nukes and detonated at equidistances high above Earth to ensure a blanket spread...but you would also take out most of Canadaa and Mexico...even central America. Effects, explosive power and positioning would have to be carefully timed and calculated. You would have to co-ordinate such shots as a night time event as the Van Allen Radiation belts are thickest on the night side to ensure the most maximum effect of charged electron bombardments...day side launches would have to be exploded fairly low to get a good wide spread effect and even then effects would be more localized...enough assets would survive to ensure national survival and retaliation. Then there are effects of local geology even the effects of large buildings in a city. Some neighborhoods or cities might not be touched while other close by cities or towns totally neutralized. An EMP weapon is really a chancy proposition that you might damage another country severely enough to knock them back to third world status...but chances are it wouldn’t be permanent.
Nukes by themselves make for poor emps. It’s when you undertake to create a huge inductance coil and a massive capacitor and saturate it with enough instantaneous energy to make the system go “snap” when you set off a high energy explosive full of charged particles that you might have something workable. The weight of such a system to create a continent wide crippler makes it impractical to launch. This is not to say emp’s couldn’t be employed in key areas to cause a large amount of damage and we should be hardening our systems. A potential solar event CME event for example, by itself should’ve been enough of a reason to have hardened our systems decades ago!
Really? Do some research. MOST scientists are concerned about a CME, but not a continent sized EMP.

Maybe...if shot at night(like the 50’s high altitude nukes were shot)...if the timing was just right where the Van Allen belts were thickest and you could get the altitude just right....it would be much more hit or miss with a day shot...as the belts are thinnest on the day side...you’d have to explode lower with more localized effects. Yet if you were trying to limit just to the US, you couldn’t. And if you miscalculated and took out parts of the western Pacific...China Russia Japan coastlines for example...then the offending country would be in for a world of hurt!
Don’t forget, the Star Prime high altitude shots affected things thousands of miles away beyond the distance of what the CONUS area is.

Around here, we prep to give ourselves a chance. No one belives it’ll be rainbows and happy times singing around a campfire. What keeps us going is hope, and the desire to see our children survive & thrive.

Because I believe — with the deepest sincerity I can possibly muster — that as matters stand today, either an EMP bomb or a Carrington Event has the potential to bring about an end to the USA, maybe even an end to Western Civilization. It’s not a joking matter.

But you aren't going to prepare yourself for it in order to give yourself a chance to stay alive. There is no reason for you to post here since you don't prepare and you will likely die near the beginning of trouble. Actually, you are a hindrance on this thread as you might influence someone to do nothing just as you are doing.
There are many emergencies that happen every year - usually weather events - and people who are prepared for emergencies have a much easier time for themselves and their family getting through these emergencies. They don't have to stand in line to get water and MREs from FEMA if they can get to a FEMA station.
I and others don't depend on government to keep us alive. I would rather be me with preps than you without them.

Rocket stove is on my list of stoves to get.
Other wise I have the following backups for cooking:
1. Two fireplaces and numerous iron skillets, dutch oven and popcorn popper to popcorn over the fire. I would like to get an insert for the living room to improve heating ability. The former family room fireplace is next to the kitchen pass through bar, so would likely cook on that one.
2. Coleman Camp stove - older model haven’t had to use it for a long time, as we no longer camp.
3. Sterno stove and cans of sterno as well as tea candles - could use some more of these, if I find a good deal.
4. Charcoal grill. Use this in the summer to keep the heat out of the house.
5. Outdoor fire pit, surrounded by huge rocks to sit one as we toast wieners, and marshmallows and other scouting type meals which we occasionally use when the kids want to in the early spring and late autumn cool nights.
6. We have a bunch of old thermos stashed to use to complete cooking things that can be brought to a boil, poured into the thermos, lid on and wait for it to finish cooking in the thermos.
7. Crock pots - I think these could also be used like the thermos, just pour the stuff in, put the lid on and then wrap a big bath towel around it and put into an ice chest for insulation while the stuff keeps on cookin’.
8. We had a smoker, but it needs to be replaced.
9. We had a gas grill, but it needs to be replaced also.
Neither the smoker nor the gas grill ever won us over, so while nice for an emergency, I doubt we’ll replace them, unless we can think of some overwhelming reason to do so. Frankly, I’d rather have a hibachi to use in the fireplace and grill what ever meat we might happen to have.
10. We have a small portable grill stored that we can toss into the truck in case we have to temporarily leave home and tailgate our suppers.
I am trying to explain rocket stoves to my hubby. I want him to build me a brick rocket stove off my basement kitchen patio, so that I can put up my pickles on that and not heat up the kitchen. Good for emergencies too.
I could keep him busy every day of the week and twice on Sunday with all the projects I can think up. LOL

I knew you would have multiple ways to cook - you and I are similar in our preps. If I had to leave, I’d put the rocket stove in SUV as that burns any biomass fuel. Sticks are everywhere so fuel would be limitless.
The rocket stove burns so intently, nothing is left of fuel except a few ashes. Because it burns fuel so efficiently, there is little smoke coming off the stove.
Keep the rocket stove on your list until you get one. It really is the stove that will be there working forever unless you drop it and totally destroy it. :o)
I was just living the way I grew up. Camping as a kid almost every week end, so we just naturally had an interest in camping and bought a little gear each year. We got a Coleman camping stove as one of our first camping equipment purchases.
Hubby wanted to do some backpacking on the trails we have around here, so we added a little more, which reminds me we also have a Coleman backpacking stove that I failed to list. We also upgraded a sleeping bag to a down sleeping bag which was lighter weight for back backing.
We used to take several canoe trips each year when we were younger, so water proof gear and quick and easy cooking on the river bank was needed. And who didn't have a back yard BBQ? Or at least a tailgating one? We used to have a block party/bbq every weekend during the 80s.
My parents and grandparents used cast iron cookware and some stainless steel stuff in the restaurants, and some big pots for cooking apple butter outdoors on a big wood fire. So I just had to have a cast iron skillet, and each year acquired a little something else till I had quite a collection.
So forth and so on. Just a way of life. Now that rocket stove, that’ll be my first real “prepper cooking method”.
My grand parents on the farm cooked with propane, but heated their house with wood. My other Granny had a fireplace with a nice insert that kept things toasty, and of course we grandkids were always roasting wieners and marshmallow or popping corn there or over a campfire. However, we didn't know that was prepping. LOL

The majority of people likely have a grill of some kind to use outdoors. The problem is, having fuel to keep it going. If propane or charcoal can’t be bought, fuel is a problem. Even getting wood would be a problem with people living in town. However, the rocket stove will burn any biomass and small limbs from bushes or ones that drop from trees, are readily available. Due to the burning efficiency of the rocket stove, it requires less fuel and it’s a life saver to have heat for boiling water/liquids, and cooking food.
Due to circumstances in moving one time, somehow I lost my fishing gear. When I realized it was gone, I thought I was really stupid to not have even a fishing rod. I did a search of fishing gear and ended up with a Shakespeare LADIES fishing rod and baits. Yes, it is PINK. That should keep men away from that rod as I doubt any man would use a PINK fishing rod. The hand hold of the rod is smaller to fit a woman’s hand. I have that stashed in a corner of my closet. The artificial bait also came with the rod. Have rod, will fish if necessary. :o)
