In retrospect perhaps it was not a good idea to let a man with a history of severe depression be an airline pilot.

Burned out at 21? (He was 28 at the time of the crash.) How many 21 year olds self-diagnose “burnout”?

eeeesh

"In retrospect perhaps it was not a good idea to let a man with a history of severe depression be an airline pilot.

I wonder if there are any regulations concerning that. Depression can make people do weird things (such as flying airplanes into mountains), and it is a difficult problem to treat effectively.

A colleague, identified as “Dieter,” told Europe1 that Sonderheimer was a trusted pilot, saying:

He was someone very reliable, he was one of the best pilots we had. I am 100 percent sure they did the best they could. That’s what I think because I knew him very well, he was one of the best, he had a lot of experience, he had more than 6,000 flight hours behind him.

That kept the cockpit door locked?

Agreed.

Couldn't you also say "In retrospect, perhaps it was not a good idea to let a man with a history of severe drug dependency become President of the United States."?

...

For most people it’s very easy to treat. Cognitive therapy works very well and requires no drugs.

Winn said U.S. air safety regulations are generally followed worldwide because of airline alliances and the airlines’ desire to have regulatory harmony across borders.

The Germanwings flight would appear to have violated the safety protocols in place at Lufthansa, which is Germanwings’ parent company. In addition, the pilot’s need for a bathroom trip on a short flight is in itself unusual, Winn said, noting that pilots “are normally pre-prepared themselves for not having to go to the lavatory on a short trip.”

“”Until all the facts are in I bet it was a computer problem.””

Entirely possible the door lock mechanism was as affected by malfunction in computers as the plane itself could be. I’m not saying that was the case with the PLANE in this incident but a possibility with any A 320....

because he was depressed and suffering 'burnout'.

Was he still depressed recently? Was he taking any antidepressant meds?

Not likely. If that was the issue you would have heard comments from the co pilot.

He would have had to be unconscious.

Also, there are pilot type of things that indicate this was a deliberate act.
