(VANITY) TOURNAMENT OF CHART-TOPPERS ('80S)
me | 1/25/15 | me

Posted on 01/25/2015 7:37:02 AM PST by the OlLine Rebel

OK, FREEPERS, LET'S START THIS CONTEST FOR THE GREATEST SONG OF THE '80S.

The baseline for the contest is the top 7 hits of each year of the '80s, as compiled by BILLBOARD. This is not based on personal preferences, biases, prejudices, or counter-culture reactivity.

The rules in general will be to vote for everything shown. No equivocating, ties, or omissions. Votes will only be counted if the "ballot" is complete.

ROUND 1

We begin by using the #7 songs of each year and paring them from 10 songs to 4 (to set up brackets for the rest of the contest).

1980 "Coming Up" Paul McCartney
1981 "Kiss on My List" Hall & Oates
1982 "Jack & Diane" John Cougar
1983 "Maneater" Daryl Hall & John Oates
1984 "Hello" Lionel Richie
1985 "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" Tears for Fears
1986 "Party All the Time" Eddie Murphy
1987 "Here I Go Again" Whitesnake
1988 "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" Belinda Carlisle
1989 "Wind Beneath My Wings" Bette Midler

Not to mention the ‘80s were a great decade to be a rocker. The handful of survivors of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (particularly Def Leppard and Iron Maiden) rose to prominence, speed/thrash metal was born, and not all hair metal sucked.

For disclosure, these are my picks (often difficult):

“Wind Beneath My Wings”
“Jack & Diane”
“Kiss on My List”
“Hello”
“Here I Go Again”
“Everybody Wants to Rule the World”
“Party All the Time”
“Coming Up”
“Heaven Is a Place on Earth”
“Maneater”

My husband should be making picks, too. He isn’t registered but I will post them for full disclosure (please, no more extras - I can only handle my own household!) when he makes his decision.

OK, we got some responses! Let’s see if we can get more! (If not, I may have to change the date to 1 week just to speed it up and not risk boredom and forgetfulness!)

Here is an update on the rankings:

“Here I Go Again”
“Everybody Wants to Rule the World”
“Jack & Diane”
“Maneater”
“Hello”
“Kiss on My List” (why is this not “Kiss IS on My List”?)
“Heaven is a Place on Earth”
“Coming Up”
“Wind Beneath My Wings”
“Party All the Time”

Interesting to note further the highest rank and mode (most popular rating) for each song:

“Here I Go Again” highest 1, mode 1
“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” highest 1, mode 3
“Jack & Diane” highest 1, mode 2
“Maneater” highest 2, mode 2 or 6
“Hello” highest 1, mode 5
“Kiss on My List” (why is this not “Kiss IS on My List”?) highest 1, mode 8
“Heaven is a Place on Earth” highest 2, mode 9
“Coming Up” highest 1, mode 10
“Wind Beneath My Wings” highest 1, mode 10
“Party All the Time”

Let’s get some more voters!

I may have to shrink the due date back a week with not much feedback coming in. Would not want to risk “losing” those who did chime in!

Yes, I think I will definitely reduce the due time to THIS Sunday, Super Bowl Sunday, Feb 1 at 6:00.

Just not enough action! (Still waiting for a certain someone to make picks!)

My husband’s picks are in:

Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Here I go again

Kiss on My List

Jack and Diane

Maneater

Coming Up

Hello

Party all the time

Wind Beneath My Wings

Heaven is a place on Earth

As a result, the only change in the order from earlier is for “Coming Up”, now better than “Heaven is a Place on Earth”. Does not change the top 4.

I am changing the due date to Feb 1, 6:00pm as stated earlier. I do not anticipate any more picks, but just in case....

Ok, I'm playing - but I gotta say, in looking at this list, it's obvious why I like (d) the songs I did.
