Elon Musk: The new Tesla Roadster can travel some 400 miles on a single charge
The Washington Post's The Switch Blog ^ | December 26, 2014 | Brian Fung

Car nerds, you just got an extra present under the tree.

Tesla announced Friday an upgrade for its Roadster, the electric car company’s convertible model, and said that the new features significantly boost its range -- beyond what many traditional cars can get on a tank of gasoline.

The company is installing three retrofits for the vehicle. First up is a battery upgrade that marks a 31 percent increase in capacity. Next is an “aero kit” that’ll alter the car’s profile slightly, producing a 15 percent reduction in wind drag. Finally, the Roadster will be getting new, more efficient tires.

The result is an electric vehicle that can reliably travel about 350 miles before needing a recharge, and possibly more in ideal conditions. That’s pretty similar — or even better — than many conventional gasoline-powered cars. The University of Michigan estimates that the average fuel economy of a new car in 2014 was about 25 miles per gallon. With a 12- or 13-gallon tank, that gets you about 325 miles on a single fill-up....

Course this is going to cost double what a gas car will cost and a fill-up only takes 10 mins.

Pray America is waking

I don’t think they make the Roadster anymore, so this will be an upgrade kit for owners who already have the car.

At a hundred thousand each how long would it take to amortize it over say a Nissan Sentra at twenty-one grand and 30+ MPG?

I don’t think electric cars suck, but Tesla appears to be surviving very well based on credits and other structured tax and environmental credits. So you and I subsidize it.

But I'm not.

So you just get to help pay for it.

It’s been a very long time since the era when electric cars outsold combustion-engined cars, whether internal combusion or external (and external once outsold internal).

Saw a Tesla the other day in my VERY small town. It came to the intersection and refused to wait. Then cut through the corner gas station to make time.

Thrilling, but at what speeds can it do this?

If the speed profiles mirroed that of a gas engine getting similar mileage, then maybe there is a point here.

Of course, if the damn thing needs to sit all night to recharge and is not available to drive, it is essentially useless.

Tesla is not competing against the Nissan Sentra.

I've always wondered where the mentally challenged who piss away so much money on one of these things think the electricity appears from?

Dylithium crystals? Unicorn farts? Humpback whale songs? I know it's some kind of non-deity faith based system that hinges on "settled science."

I'd make a point of telling them it's coal, natural gas from fracked wells or nuclear. But, it's more fun to keep it a tippy-top secret, held by only the intelligent and anyone who remembers third grade science.

The Tesla CAN’T compete against the Nissan Sentra or any other gasoline/diesel powered vehicle.

Get back to me when you can “fuel” a straight electric vehicle as quickly as one of those archaic buggies favored by us backward troglodytes.
