White Lone Star College Student Doesn't Want to Learn About White Privilege
Houston Press ^ | Dec. 4 2014 | Michael Barajas

Posted on 12/07/2014 1:22:43 PM PST by Bettyprob

The concept of white privilege remains controversial in the same way people still argue about climate change. A small, increasingly-fringe faction might argue that it doesn't exist at all. Another broad, more conservative group might concede that it does, technically, exist, but still disagree about what it means, whether it's important and what, if anything, we can do about it.

Still, many others would argue that acknowledging and working to understand it is an important step toward fixing the problem -- in the case of white privilege, the problem being compounded, inter-generational inequality that, although sometimes subtle, is still present in the everyday lives of people of color.

Even if we concede that white privilege -- the idea that being born white comes with certain inherent advantages -- is "controversial," does that mean the topic shouldn't be broached in a college course?

According to one white Lone Star College-Tomball student, the concept is just too offensive -- offensive enough to file a complaint against his professor, according to Channel 2.

My white privilege needs a tune up because there are a whole lot of white people doing better than I am.

White privilege? I lived in South America, where I constantly operated at a disadvantage because of hispanic privilege in language and culture. So, I recognized that I was at a disadvantage and improved my language skills constantly and tried to honor the dominant culture. I achieved a certain level of success.

As long as our under-privileged compatriots continue to play the “my-language-is-better-than-yours-for-me” or the “my-culture-is-better-than-yours-for-me” games, of course there will be white privilege.

Michelle Robinson Obama got into Princeton, and the Harvard.

I’ve heard that her Princeton thesis reads like it was written by a near illiterate.

What White Privilege?

Journalism, if that is what this is and not an opinion column, does not set the stage with such semantically loaded wording as “A small, increasingly-fringe faction ...” So I presume this is written by your typical aggrieved person of color exercising his PRIVILEGE of being somewhat of an ass!

If you act white, you are more likely to succeed. What is “acting white”?

A small, increasingly-fringe faction might argue that it doesn't exist at all.

In a country where thousands of programs, scholarships, and funds are set up for non-whites, hiring quotas favor non-whites, and ONLY white people may be accused of racism, those who disagree with 'white privilege' are a FRINGE? REALLY?

I think the truth is that those who are scamming whites, lacking the data to present a valid argument, revert to name-calling.

As happens so often in history, by the time people are talking and complaining about something the most, it’s already out or on its way out ..

This is just repackaging.

Just more liberal soft bigotry of low expectations, i.e., blacks can not make it on their own.

Someone should explain the "white privilege" issue to white men I know who were overlooked for police academy spots because they were granted to black men scoring 10-12 points less on entrance exams to account for race-norming or whatever the buzzword of the day was back then...

Gosh, I must’ve been hiding behind the door when they passed out ‘White Privilege” -

I could’ve used some of that - especially after, at age 14 in 1949 - I found myself on my own. I found a job working my room and board and managed to graduate high school - ‘college course’, honor role.

But there was no college for me, no local scholarships etc - those were reserved for boys.

I had to work to pay for a place to live and food to eat...at little more than a third of the ‘salary’ as males - and no insurance.

That situation never really changed for me in ‘my’ time - even tho’ I held the same positions as a males, I was paid far less - and they got the promotions.

I am excited for my granddaughters these days. They do not face that. Indeed, they are making great salaries, some over $100,000. They are finally ‘equal.’

“White Privilege” classes: G.W. Bush pointed it out - an insult to blacks - low expectations.

What about classes featuring the MANY blacks that have ‘made it’ - through hard work and perseverance - self responsibility ?

More to the point, the students are having to pay an expensive tuition to be berated instead of taught. And the Lone Star college system is a *public-funded* community college.

Will the public have to create an initiative drive to forbid publicly funded institutions from engaging in race-based indoctrination? While individual professors can be racists, as long as it is not part of their classes, they can legally hold those beliefs. But for the public to be funding institutional racism is beyond the pale.

Attn: Texas Legislature
Subj: Open Racism in the Lone Star Community College District

Please no longer subsidize these practices. Spending public money to attack students based on their race is both ignorant and deplorable. If the schools insist on engaging in such practices, they should not receive public funding.

“white privledge, this is a label the racebaiters, progressives commies and socialist invented to create imaginary divide that the low income, dependent plantation slave, the guilty white folk and the braindead white college youth and academia want to believe.
Does billions of dollars over 50 years into civil rights poverty programs smell of black priviledge? Does Affirmative actionprograms, where blacks get jobs not because of thier experience and skills but because of the color of thier skin reek of black priviledge? Does social justice smell of black priviledge? Does the united negro fund smell of black priviledge? the congresssional black caucus? We are made out to be the enemy BY THE EMEMIES. Be vigilant my friends they are pulling out all the stops

A small, increasingly-fringe faction might argue that it doesn't exist at all. Another broad, more conservative group might concede that it does, technically, exist, but still disagree about what it means, whether it's important and what, if anything, we can do about it.

Four decades ago, I used to wonder whether Vietnamese immigrants had made a good decision coming here. Would they and their children encounter prejudice for their entire lifetimes? Now my college-educated Vietnamese neighbors have white privilege. My college-educated Chinese neighbors have white privilege. My college-educated Indian neighbors have white privilege. My college-educated black neighbors have white privilege. My college-educated Hispanic neighbors have white privilege. I am in one of the least diverse neighborhoods in the country - all races live in my neighborhood, but we are all wealthy, college-educated professionals.

White privilege is liberal code for working hard, getting educated, and not having kids until you are married. White privilege is a choice, and when liberals trick their black and Hispanic victims into thinking that White privilege has something to do with skin color, the liberals guarantee failure. Why bother working hard or playing by the rules if the deck is stacked against you? That accomplishes the liberal goal of keeping people dependent on them - like pets or slaves. Liberals disgust me.

I went to graduate school in China and had to learn to bend to the dominate culture; submit to be called a “Gweilow” (Foreign Devil) by the locals and have doctors tell me that if I was Chinese I could still walk on that broken foot because Chinese were tougher.

How privileged was I?

I would state to people who use the term “White privilege” that it is a social construct that I do not find useful or true and watch heads explode.

You see in their worlds, buying a construct is a choice.

I think it is a disadvantage to be white. We don't have an NAACP promoting us. We don't get quotas and set-asides. If I got shot and killed committing a crime no-one would protest on my behalf. If I sneak across the border and enter another country illegally I'll get arrested, not rewarded. If I meet a liberal, they are going to automatically assume terrible things about me based only on my skin color. (but of course they are not racist)

White privilege? {snort} Just the opposite in this day and age.

White is a color

Actually, neither black not white is a color - they are the 'absence' of color. (I'm an artist)

So actually, the whole 'color' thing is based on a misconception from the get go.

>>If you’re going to “teach” white privilege, you should also allow discussions of “the white man’s burden.”
>
>That is an excellent point! Thanks.

Or you could turn it into a sermon, and rather easily:

(Luke 12:48)
But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.

(Mat 25:29)
For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

Take their assertion of your privilege and show how it religiously obligates you.
