Letter: Ted Cruz is no Ronald Reagan
The Portsmouth Herald ^ | November 21, 2014 | James Lalos

To the Editor:

During a presidential debate in 1984, President Reagan said, “I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and who have lived here, even though some time back, they may have entered illegally.” As Republicans contemplate their response to President Obama’s immigration action, they should consider that Reagan and George H.W. Bush took unilateral action to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation. In both cases, their actions were eventually incorporated into legislation passed by Congress.

Congress, now led by Republicans, has the power to legislate a 21st century solution on immigration and the fair treatment of over 11 million undocumented aliens who live in this country in pursuit of the American Dream. The Senate has passed a bipartisan bill that would likely pass the House and signed by the president if John Boehner would just put it up for a vote. The bill has teeth for border control and discourages the hiring of undocumented workers and recognizes that we are not going to engage in impractical and unethical “ethnic cleansing” of millions of people.

Our country’s demographic trends overwhelmingly favor Obama’s initiative. The white population is declining. Deaths already exceed births among white Americans. By 2043 - less than 30 years hence - whites will be a minority. Ethnic and racial minorities now make half of the under-5 age group and whites are already a minority among babies. In five years, minorities will make up more than half of children under 18. A large part of these demographics trends are Hispanic and Asian immigrants and their first generation offspring. Prolonged legal battles on immigration by Republicans, focused on lawsuits, government shutdowns and impeachment will distract Republicans from demonstrating that they can govern heading into 2016 and further alienate Hispanic, Asian and other immigrant groups from the party.

And what of the longer term? If Democrats keep the White House in 2016, Obama’s executive order will likely stand even if no comprehensive legislation is forthcoming for another decade. If there is a Republican president, he will have four likely choices: (1) round up those that have come forward under the executive order and “resettle” them, (2) cajole Congress to pass legislation that recognize these immigrants are “out” and part of the fabric of society, (3) deprive millions of a livelihood by forcing them back underground, or (4) let the Obama order stand. The future plays into the Democrats’ hands - hence the reason why Obama is going with the executive order now.

Republicans have an opportunity to address immigration in a responsible and adult manner, or, they can take the Ted Cruz approach and entertain themselves through a ”reality-TV” show just for the ratings. But then again, Ted Cruz is no Ronald Reagan.

Read the letter. He's implying that Senator Cruz is to the right of President Reagan, as if that's a bad thing.

He gets my vote just for standing up.

This clown is from the same ilk that told us Cruz filibustering was going to cost the GOP or shutting the gov’t down was going to do the same.

If the establishment despises Cruz in 2016 they way they did Reagan in 1980, I'm giving him as much $$ as I can.

Cruz it or lose it.

Agreed. It won’t be long before the detestable schumer begins whining about the unfairness of these new millions of legal workers who pay taxes but are deprived of their voice. “Taxation without representation” will be the next droning mantra the radicals roll-out in preparation for 2016. It will not end, even when the democrats have their reward of 10 million new voters, they will continue to import more gibsmedats.

OH. Thanks for catching me not reading it. I just zipped by and thought immediately that whatever else someone may accuse him of, at least he is not like the doofuses we’ve been offered the past two rounds.

30% tax on all money leaving the US.

They will all go home.

A less friendly atmosphere will give the “nobama illegals” good reason to drift back to Mexico or wherever.

The less friendly atmosphere can be: outlawing anchor babies retroactively of any illegal parent and keep it for LEGAL immigrants only, cut off all welfare to illegals and begin charging the illegal parents with child abuse if they subject their kids to hunger, make it easier for immigrant laborers to get Green Card, but make its impossible for any illegal to get a Green Card, enforce employer verification and offer free oneway passage beck to their home country. It would not take long before their friends and USA kin to grow tired of personally taking care of illegals. The illegal border crossings would slow to a trickle.

Yup. e-Verify for anything/everything. Even day laborers.

If that kind of checking/verifying is good for private firearms sales and transfers, Dems should have no problem with it for employment.

Right?

As much as I love Reagan, the amnesty he agreed to was one of his big mistakes as there was no mechanism to ensure the border was secured.

When it comes to ILLEGAL immigration, I want the next President to be another Ike, not another Reagan.

That’s true. Reagan was a special man of his own breed, just as is Cruz.

Folly compounded.

The ultimate issue governing immigration, the insane pursuit of "diversity," by the Left, and the humanist folly that grossly over-emphasizes the human effect on the earth's temperature, is being overlooked. What is ultimately at stake, is the sovereign independence of the Constitutional Federal Union of 50 Republics, that was based upon a conscious decision in 1776, to be independent from the rest of human politics & outside control.

A union of States, increasingly more culturally removed from those who decided upon that independence; increasingly less devoted to the history of those who decided upon that independence; is never going to defend that independence with the zeal that any earlier generation would have found in that history & original culture.

We are fast being manipulated into a point of no return to the America we have known & believe in. Anyone who understands this needs to recognize that time really is running out.

See Surrender By Subterfuge, to understand why so much of Academia has been running deliberate cover for the orchestrated drift towards our destruction.

“The amnesty was the worst mistake of my presidency”
- Ronald Reagan

Cruz and other conservatives have the benefit of hindsight and can learn from Reagan’s mistakes. Liberals are using the Lucy strategy - they are holding the immigration football and begging us to run at it just like President Reagan did. The difference is that we now know they will pull it away at the last minute and never follow through on promises to finally start enforcing the laws they have completely ignored for two generations.

American voters have to much power for the elites, they must and are taking that away
in order to turn America and burn the Constitution. They'll replace that with the old
tried and failed Socialism.

This is not their entire game plan, but it's the beginning of Hell in America.
Civil war would make them scream with delight. Well, we have men and women
who know who they are. They'll hang from light posts.
