Imagine you are a student doing math work. You've gone through a number of questions, and you feel you've really got the hang of everything. Then, all of a sudden you get this question: "Tell how to make 10 when adding 8 + 5." What do you respond?
That was the problem facing a young student learning how to add using Common Core. The student responded with confusion, answering the same way most of us would: "You cannot make 10 withe [sic] 8 + 5."
The student was told he was wrong.
Underneath, his teacher wrote, "Yes you can. Take 2 from the 5 and add it to 8 (8 + 2 = 10). Then add 3." But wait, if you're adding three, it's not 10 any more... It's 13.
And why does 5 need to be broken down? Why not 8? Why not turn 8 into 5 and 3, add 5 plus 5, then add 3? Still, though, 8 + 5 will never add up to 10.
You can see the question, student answer, and teacher correction below:

political indoctrination is not enough, now kids won’t even know how to count to 10
Here is a wild idea. Have the kids memorize the addition tables and drill the kids with addition flash cards until they know them absolutely cold. To do even worse, teach them multiplication tables in the same manner.
Yeah, I know it’s racist.
In Advanced Math classes, we used to postulate that
2 + 2 = 5 for large values of “2”.
(Math humor. We never thought 40 years ago that liberals would one day teach it!)
It’s very easy, citizen!
2+2=5
5-2+8+2+3=10
Get it?
Or would you rather have your eyes and face eaten by rats?
So once again: 5-2+8+2+3=10
You see? Excellent. Very good, citizen.
Lol! True. Did you write that question?
I like my way better.
8+5 = 10 because I ran out of fingers so 8+5 has to be 10.
So easy!
That's the whole point; making young minds susceptible to liberal/leftist type 'thinking'.
"Look....you take the 13 and subtract 10. Then you add it to the 7 that the cash register shows and give me 10 bucks. Didn't you pay attention in math class?"
Common Core Math has one purpose: to help destroy the family by making it impossible for parents to help their kids with their homework.
“Nazi theory indeed specifically denies that such a thing as “the truth” exists. The implied objective of this line of thought is a nightmare world in which the Leader, or some ruling clique, controls not only the future but the past. If the Leader says of such and such an event, “It never happened” well, it never happened. If he says that two and two are five well, two and two are five.”
- George Orwell, “1984”
This is easy!
If you are a Democrat in charge of counting votes in an election, the Democrat candidate gets 6 votes in each of two precincts, and the Republican gets 5 votes in one precinct and 8 in the other, you throw away 3 of the Republican’s votes in the second precinct. That way the Democrat wins both precincts and the election. And anyone who complains is racist!
this “logic” started some time ago....when my now 29 yro dtr came home as a young student she showed me a paper that had all sorts of red marks over it, but my dtr told me the teacher passed her on the quiz anyway because my dtr had a “feel” for the information....
The real question is how do you feel about those numbers? Are any of the numbers marginalized and victimized?
I remember back in the ‘70s I took a class in the so-called New Math.
Set theory and a bunch of other nonsense. It never made sense to me.
Commie Core sounds like the same thing.
Well, yeah. The problem should've said "tell how to make a 10 when adding 8 + 5.
It's still dumb. This will dull the quick minds that don't need an intermediary step for 8 + 5. For the less intellectually capable, a far better approach would be to quickly count out the "add 5" on their fingers and/or use good ol' fashioned flashcards.
When you add it all up, subtract common sense, the answer is Child Abuse.
Except set theory actually has real-world applications. This garbage? Not so much.
