My dog Died Today
N/A | Today | Me

Posted on 08/22/2014 7:28:40 PM PDT by occamrzr06

I had my Australian Shepard put down today. Her name was Sidney, as in the city in Australia. She was 15 Years 3 months.

She had had dementia for the last year or so. For the last year she hadn't been able to control her bowels. She could hold the pee, but number 2 just came when it was ready.

Today when I got home, she couldn't stand up. Her back legs just wouldn't work.

I took her outside and laid her in the nicest part of the grass. She looked peaceful as the wind blew her face.

On the way to the vet, my wife held her up so she could sniff the wind as we drove.

We are having her cremated and the place gives a nice teak box with the ashes, a nice poem, and a plaster of paris paw print. The vet asked what box I wanted. I didn't know they had different boxes, they didn't when her sister passed. They had the standard, or one with hearts. I picked the one with hearts, since my kids named her, the love dog.

She is now in heaven chasing bunnies with her sister (Somersby, also a city in Australia), who passed 3 years ago.

Your prayers are appreciated.

I have sent that message to a lot of people who say they are never going to have another dog. My eyes well up every time I read it. We rescue dogs, so we usually have two or three at varying ages and it helps to have some hugs when it's time for one to go.

I can't imagine a life without these wonderful friends God created for us.

So sorry to hear this sad news. Our furry friends are such an important part of our lives, I hope you get another furry friend soon.

Add me to your prayers. Our little 3 pound teacup poodle, Josie, is in the ER this evening after suffering brain trauma. I’m a wreck — waiting to hear back from the doctor. It’s wait and see.

She’s an insane retriever. Hurt herself going for a ball.

So sorry for your loss.

It is difficult to comment, as one of our girls is slowly being eaten by cancer. We know the day is coming soon.

Words mean diddley, but I know the pain.

Be well.

To everyone who posted to this thread (if I missed anyone, I apologize) I thank you.

Your prayers, thoughts, anecdotes, poems and words of encouragement have been wonderful.

It has taken a few days to take in and read all of the comments, but the comfort from all of that has been great.

Thank you again.

I still dream about my last best friend and having to take him for his multiple walks daily, and when I wake up it’s a very difficult emotion to deal with. I know my personal situation would quickly improve if I could manage to bring myself to acquire another canine to replace my last one, but at this point I am unable to and I have to deal with the mental anguish that persists after five years come October. I loved that dog more than any other girlfriend or even my ex wife for the unrequited companionship and never ending love he gave me while requiring little to nothing in return and I don’t know if I can bring myself to begin another long term “relationship” again as the ending of the last one was very difficult to bear, and still is.

It’s become much easier to manage over the years and I hope for you as well time will heal your “wound”.

For me the only thing I could do to feel whole again was to bring in a new dog to love. My beloved deceased dog hated to see me upset and she was always looking out for me so I know she guided me to the new dog too. It would do my heart well to know that such a quality dog person as yourself has opened their heart to a new dog too. It helps you to love and honor you old friend even more. I think your new one is waiting for you now.

Occam, I am very sorry and know how you feel.

You did right by Sidney. You will see that sweet doggie again.

God Bless You and Sidney.

Thank you...she is a sweet girl and pretty smart (for a lab anyway), but she would tear a limb off anyone who tried to hurt any of our four kids. Unfortunately, she’s going through hot spots right now, and she’s driving Mom crazy trying to get them to heal up. I am threatening her with the cone collar if she doesn’t stop ;)

My wife was so broken up over our last dog that we waited two (LONG) years before she agreed to every have another. I won’t wait that long again. There’s nothing like a new dog to fill the void in your heart. You never forget or stop loving the old ones, but it is easier to move on when there’s a new critter in your life.

Through my tears I pray with you and many others here.

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!

Oh gosh, I'm not alone. I've got 3 other hairy four legged kids, a wonderful wife, 2 kids and 6 grand kids.

Thanks for your thoughts.
