Two national chain restaurants have asked that customers refrain from bringing firearms into their establishments, saying the weapons can create an uncomfortable atmosphere for other diners.
Sonic Drive-In and Chili's Grill & Bar both issued statements Friday requesting that customers keep their guns out of their restaurants even if they have an open carry permit.
The request, which stops short of an outright ban, came after members of the gun-rights group Open Carry Texas walked into Texas outlets of Sonic and Chili's carrying assault rifles.
Dallas-based Brinker International, which owns the Chili's chain, said in a statement it was dedicated to providing "a safe environment for our guests and team members."
"We recognize that the open carry of firearms creates an uncomfortable atmosphere and is not permitted under many local liquor laws," spokeswoman Ashley Johnson said....

I read it just like Paul, it’s the article and quoted in the first post.
I agree. If I were eating in a restaurant and saw a group of people walk in with AR’s I would immediately suspect something was about to go horribly wrong. The same group with holstered handguns would be a completely different story.
On another point, some people on this board apparently think that it is bad form to impolitely assert ones constitutional rights and to engage in the tactics of confrontation in order to advance conservative causes. Those people apparently have not been paying attention for the last 40 to 50 years with regard to how the left has successfully used such tactics to advance their various causes.
Isn’t Sonic a notorious donor to the Rat Party?
Was in Austin last week. Sign number 2 is EVERYWHERE!
Slow learners.
You’re right friend. I was thinking perhaps they were AR 15s or similar, that’s the way I read it but you are correct, the press can overstate the situation.
Sounds like it, almost sounded like the owner could have been a Clinton croney. Reading the wiki article it sounds like Sonic was started originally by a milkman so it has probably gone through some ownership-changes since those days.
Sonic?????
You don’t “go in to” a Sonic!
You drive thru or get served in your parking space by a car hop!
I took a look at Sonic’s Facebook page. Looks to me like a bunch of Moms That Need Some Action and their metrosexual pw’d husbands have been called to action, lots of them from back east (like I worry about what some idiot Bloomberg-brigade woman from New Jersey thinks!). Being in Oklahoma, I may let Sonic know what I think about this, or I may just silently never return to their drive-in.
Exactly. Looking to shock and bully the women, immigrants, and college-age kids who work fast food and chain restaurants. That’s why I find these “protests” so contemptible. You’re going out of your way to scare women and children.
Where I live, there’s a bar called the Rock Store off Mulholland Drive where every big Harley owner in leather gathers every Sunday. Why not have one of your long gun open carry protests there, and insist you’re not looking for a fight?
Yeah. I didn’t think so...
I’ll say what I said earlier. Show up there with your family, ask the babe (politely) if they have a problem with concealed guns. If they say yes, then have your wife say something like “Black Angus (or whatever)” is good with concealed guns, and you say, “ok, hun, let’s all go there instead”.
If we simply don’t show, they’ll never know that we’re boycotting - we do not have a good record with successes.
Same here. If they don’t want the free security that comes from having armed and trained patrons, then they don’t want my business. Well, they don’t get it now. One of my kids is friends with some of the kids that work at Sonic. We here stories. .. As for chili’s, I don’t care for their food, so I don’t go there on the rare occasions we do go out. We tend to go to places a couple of rungs higher on the ladder.
Good point. No one will ever know unless I have to draw it. In that case, they are going to be thankful I’m there.
Sonic is a drive thru not a go in and sit.
My truck has a gun too. But, we must keep them away from SUVs.
Up thread someone stated that they now have some sit down locations.
Sonic is average quality drive in
Chilis has gone to crap since the ex pot smuggler founder sold out to Pillsbury in mid 80s
In the late 70s Chilies chiliburgers and fries at the Austin and Dallas stores were incredible
