Microsoft hopes to make it easier for Windows XP users to drop their old computers and upgrade to a newer Surface or PC by offering them $100 to do so.
The Redmond-based company announced earlier this month that support and security updates will no longer be available for its popular old operating system after April 8. That doesnt mean the computers will immediately become unusable, but they may be more vulnerable to hackers.
Windows XP users can get $100 off when they buy a Surface Pro 2 or select PCs for $599 and more. The cheapest is an Acer Aspire touchscreen laptop for $599, while the priciest is a Dell XPS touchscreen laptop that starts at $2,299. There are several laptops and all-in-one computers in between.

Can I downgrade to XP and claim the rebate?
People love XP and hate the rest. I wish I still had XP. I know lawyers that are still using Windows 98. Lawyers do not like change. Especially change for stupid reasons. You will find lawyers all across the country using old but perfectly good stuff.
I miss MS-DOS, WordPerfect 5.1 and Lotus 123. Nothing ever crashed.
Beside, with my eyes, the monitor is out of reach..........
I will likely take the advice of FReepers and just buy a new machine with Win7 loaded on it in the near future. Looks like less that $700 gets a darn nice box.
Right, those not using the net in particular for business will probably die 50 years from not with XP.
Was at Whole Foods today and I saw their registers are on XP.
Bill Gates Sucks.
They should offer $100 rebates to anyone who bought a machine with this P/OS 8.x installed on it. There was a rumor that they were going to start giving it away (free download), but I don’t think that ever came about.
Thanks smokingfrog
I noticed my doctor was using XP for he medical record computer during a recent visit.
Already got a macbook pro. My next desktop will be a mac. MS is stuck on stupid.
"Save $100 when you buy any Surface Pro 2 or select PCs over $599."
Shutting off XP support is gonna piss off the banking industry, and make them think hard about Linux!
Sum ting wong soon!
My dentist has a pretty new office. Someone in her family is a computer techie that set up her office system and they all appear to run on XP pro.
Using my XP right now. In the other room I have a Windows 98 that I use to interface to an old scanner that won’t upgrade to anything else. its a perfectly good scanner its just that there is no patch to update it for later versions and I’ve searched the web extensively for a solution —so I use the 98 and the scanner as an out of date but perfectly good marriage between the two.
I’d be tempted to get a Surface Pro, but they’re still too expensive in my opinion.
"According to some reports from the industry, it seems that now Microsoft is supplying Surface Pro 2 tablets with older processors, despite the fact it had promised customers that the new version will get shipped."
