Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has won the 2013 Heisman Trophy.
Winston is only the second redshirt freshman to win the award after Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel was handed the trophy as a redshirt freshman last year. Winston is the third player in school history to earn the distinction, following former Seminole QBs Charlie Ward ('93) and Chris Weinke ('00).

Well, there’s always Steph Curry!!!
Curry seems like a good role model.
I am lucky - my son is almost 7 and I seem to still be his hero. I know that it will be much harder in the years ahead to keep it that way, but I am going to try!
Now you're distorting the analogy. To emphasize the legalisms you would have been correct to state, "There's insufficient evidence here to say OJ killed anybody." That was the finding of the jury, and by extension, the legal system.
In Winston's case, the most precise legal argument that can be made (and has been made by you) is, "There's insufficient evidence here to say Winston raped anybody." That is the finding of the DA, and by extension, the legal system.
I don’t disagree that UT and our fans pushed him too hard. I still resent that they created an argument that defensive players deserved the award as well. Woodson is the only defensive player to ever win the award and there have been far more dominant defensive players IMO before and since.
Woodson was a great player and I have never taken anything away from him - they just created a controversy and many college fans were tired of hearing about Manning. Funny thing, he is still one of the most talked about football players.
I don’t think it hurt his career. There is a perception by SEC schools and fans that media is slanted towards some other conferences that are bigger media markets. Thankfully the string of BCS championships by the SEC seems to have changed that a bit.
I am not distorting anything - your analogy conflates and disfigures and loses all sense of proportionality and is just almost worthless
Simpson is not guilty in the eyes of the law, but Winston is not even chargeable in the eyes of the law. Now there is a chance that they are equally guilty, but while we have every reason to believe Simpson is guilty, we have almost as much reason to believe Winston is not. Do you even know what is known about the accuser? No, you don’t.
And again, you also conflated the argument about Winston recusing himself and the DA and the issue of legal guilt. You just keep mixing and matching in a totally illogical mess of an attempt to vent your self righteousness about an issue you are ignorant of.
No, total ignorance would imply I was unaware the credibility and prestige of the Heisman Trophy would be undermined by this in many people's eyes. Of that I'm quite certain.
What nasty comments did I make about the Duke players?
Actually OJ was found to have murdered the two. It was a civil trial which doesn’t require the same degree of proof as a criminal trial. Still they did find that he murdered.
As for the criminal trial, everyone who is not stupid or totally corrupted by the Black is perfect attitude abounding today, knew he committed murder. Their was enough evidence to convict him many times over. The jury chose to ignore the facts and bowed to public pressure.
Well the Heisman may take a little bit of a prestige hit .but really, I think most people already understand that college sports are simply not pristine. And the award was already tainted recently by the Reggie Bush incident.
And frankly, it is not Jamies Winston’s job to rescue the prestige of the award, nor that of college football. And it is not the job of the Heisman voters to try and see into the future as to whether or not Winston’s winning of it will stand the test of time. If Winston really stains the award, like Bush, he will lost it post facto, like Bush.
To expect more out of this award is kind of pollyannish. To keep a player, who may end up being totally innocent, from getting it would not be very fair either.
It’s an imperfect world.
Given the power and influence of FSU, is there not also at least a slim chance the Winston DA may have done the same thing as the Simpson jury?
Slim chance yes .maybe even more than slim - but you’ve already assumed that is the case and are insisting Winston should not accept the award .
Proportionality dude.
I changed to FSU. Forgot to delete my Bowden reference.
It didn’t hurt Manning at all. He is above that fray.
It was UT that screwed it up. Look at what they did to the program by firing Fulmer.
Look at Cutcliff taking Duke to the ACC title game. That is nuts. Best season since 1941.
Tennessee has a leadership problem and it lies in the Regency.
I've never been selected for a Heisman, but perhaps one of the greatest honors I've ever had bestowed upon me was a commission in the US Army. I received it not only because of the work I'd done to attain it, but also because in doing so, I established expectations of me for a position of greater trust and responsibility. Academy Award winners may receive their Oscars based on a movie they made in the past year, but I think there is an implicit expectation that they're not going out to make a bomb the next year, or bring disgrace upon the movie industry (if that's even possible). Presenting bodies, if they take their awards seriously, have a vested interest in not undermining the prestige of their own awards. Similarly, those selected for the awards have a vested interest in maintaining the elite nature of their recognition. In the case of the Heisman, the word "integrity" figures into the criterion, and even the appearance of impropriety besmirches the integrity of the award.
If Winston had asked for his name to be withdrawn after the DA's announcement, he would not have jeopardized any criminal case. Similarly, if he clearly articulated that he was doing so only to remove the controversy from the 2013 award, and declare his intent to vie for it that much harder next year, it would be hard for a civil litigant to paint it as an admission of liability, and in fact, would speak to his character.
Even if it did not, it would still have been the honorable thing to do, but I suppose CS Lewis had it pegged decades ago when he wrote, We make men without chests and expect from them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.
Fulmer is most to blame for his firing - he kept too many non-performing assistants. The mark of a great program in college football is other schools hiring your coaches and that was not happening.
You are right about Cutcliffe - great coach and a good man and Fulmer was just not the same without him. I love Coach Fulmer and appreciate what he did for the university. I just wish he had not been so content and had kept some of that fire (along with Cutcliffe). Cut would have been the logical choice for us, but outside of QB’s he was never known as a great recruiter and that is vital for a school like UT that does not have the home-state kids to draw from.
We are suffering right now, but we can at least be excited about Butch Jones on the recruiting trail. Hopefully he can turn it around and if he can’t, we will be in a much better position talent-wise for the next guy. I would not wish the coaching carousel on anyone.
I am not a big fan of the UT board, but I would have had no problem with them forcing Fulmer to bring in some new blood. From what I know, I think the boosters did and Fulmer got defiant and the rest is history. You can’t blame one without blaming the other.
I've made no such assumption.
"...and are insisting Winston should not accept the award.."
At least you got that part right.
I think I got commissioned the same time you did - you graduated in 91? The good old days before it was “an Army of one.” The Clinton draw down and the beginning of all that good EEO and diversity training - all the things that made the Army (that did not have a diversity problem) so great!
Well you have your right to that opinion.
We have sucked ass ever since Fulmer was fired. Florida sucked ass this year and we couldn’t even beat them.
The Tennessee problem is at the top.
Explain to me the non-performing assistants and that leading to his firing.
Sounds like a lack of nepotism is not welcome.
Fulmer had UT playing post-season every year.
What now?
>I mean, look at who we have in the WH.<
.
And don’t forget to take a look at what we have in the House and Senate.
