An Applebee's diner refused to leave a tip for religious reasons. The waitress who exposed it wonders if Jesus will pay her bills.
I was a waitress at Applebee's restaurant in Saint Louis. I was fired Wednesday for posting a picture on Reddit.com of a note a customer left on a bill. I posted it on the web as a light-hearted joke.
This didn't even happen at my table. The note was left for another server, who allowed me to take a picture of it at the end of the night.
Someone had scribbled on the receipt, "I give God 10%. Why do you get 18?"
I assumed the customer's signature was illegible, but I quickly started receiving messages containing Facebook profile links and websites, asking me to confirm the identity of the customer. I refused to confirm any of them, and all were incorrect.
I worked with the Reddit moderators to remove any personal information. I wanted to protect the identity of both my fellow server and the customer. I had no intention of starting a witch-hunt or hurting anyone.
Now I've been fired...

Do you know who tips best and are most fun as customers? Gays (male, of course.)
No, minorities, women are awful tippers.
Australians won’t tip, because... because... we don’t tip down under, matey! (And they refuse to adjust to American customs.)
When there is a mandatory tip, that’s what we tip, and we tell them, they would have gotten a lot more without that policy.
I read about it last night when Applebees issued a statement that the pastor left the note but the group he was a part of paid the gratuity.
Applebees is closer to a pub, but they are not Burger King.
Ate in Hawaii at Ruth Cris and that was HIGHLY over rated.
Applebees is a lower middle class place IMO, but you don’t stand in line there at a register to order and wait for your order like McDonalds.
Even bowling alleys may have waitresses deserving of tips for service.
That’s what we are doing here more and more...tipping in cash.
Bartender - 5%
Cocktail waitress (yes it was a long time ago) - 5%
Maitre D - 10%
Busboys - 10%
Kitchen Staff - One Six Pack
That is one thing that always bugged me as a cook at restaurant in the early 1970s when I was in college. The "kitchen staff," the people who actually cooked the meals, made minimum wage period. No tips. While the waitresses made over $400 a night in tips, all the while taking breaks, and blaming the cooks for their mistakes (forgetting to turn in a ticket to the cooks, etc.) while the cooks worked non stop without a break. Sorry, had to get that off my chest.
Hmmmm.....wonder what the IRS would say if we all said the same thing this so called “pastor” said.......???
I don’t think most people realize how little waiters and waitresses make pre tips. And I complained about my son’s tips being taken from him and redistributed among all workers when he worked at a car wash. At least he was making minimum wage. But he was really bummed when a $50 tip was taken from him when he worked ALONE on a car one day. It was incentive to find another job.
Actually, haircutters and bartenders can make less than minimum, at least in some states. And, therefore, I always tip them 15-20%, depending on service. (10% if poor, 25% if exceptional, or even more if I received a discount, because you should always tip on the pre-discounted price.)
Other professions (hotel maids, food deliveries) are paid poorly, so I feel obliged to tip them. But some are tipped only for doing good service (furniture deliveries) or honest service (cabbies).
Well, you didn’t answer my questions and if they don’t want to pay their employees them DON’T hire them and serve like McDonalds!! Don’t going putting the extra cost on the customers when living in a OBUTTHOLE economy!! Maybe the customers should get smart and NOT go there and then see how they like it! THey are charging way too much for the food then!!!!
“Who would Jesus fire?”
We’re all gonna find out one day, ain’t we now?
Mandatory tips for groups of certain size were invented because groups tended to stiff waitresses, occupy tables for a long time, thus, when stiffing, in practice robbing the waitresses, all the while demanding the level of service that smaller parties never required. I was there when it happened, I know. Human packs can be nasty, as travel in packs encourages obnoxiousness and aggression.
They truly earn their wages through service.
If you can't tip don't go out.
I cocktailed and tended bar for 20 years. I lived off my tips and gave excellent service so I would get them. I had plenty of people who I just figured were not tippers. They still got good service, not excellent but good, and I shrugged and went on. I still made plenty of money off the tippers so never gave the non tippers a second thought. The ones I really didn’t like were the ones who were demanding and left you nothing. I still would have never thought about anything like this.
I prided myself on being neat and clean. I can’t tell you how some of the college kids wouldn’t care about their appearance, sloppy aprons, spilled food, or their wrinkly shirts. I cared about my service and appearance and I got tipped accordingly. I don’t know the term Mr. Pinks, care to explain? But, I gave 120% and got %70 in tips. It fed me and my 3 kids for 5 years, put me through engineering school, and paid my bills.
I was also a cook for several years, but I made more than minimum wage.
Where’s a $2.99 steak sandwich????
I know several people who have not only worked their way through college by waiting tables, but some of which chose to stick with it after graduation because they make decent money (particularly compared to the current job market in their fields). One thing that is common among the handful of servers who make a decent living waiting tables - they take care of their customers. Certainly, they still get stiffed, but they work hard, and treat customers like customers.
I agree that they should be paid AT LEAST minimum wage (except that politicians keep screwing that up too). Still - the system is what it is. So tip your server according to the service provided by that server. It is the system.
