General Stanley McChrystal is still making the rounds plugging his new book, as well as talking about any old issue of the day the media cares to toss his way. He sat down on Face the Nation this morning and hit a few of the standard questions on Afghanistan, gun control and Chuck Hagel, before Bob Schieffer decided to ask him whether or not it was time to bring back the draft. (H/T NRO)
When asked about his thoughts on implementing a draft on CBSs Face the Nation, General Stanley A. McChrystal said national service would have a positive impact because it would bind people to their nation and pull people together in shared experiences.
Just to get it in context, heres the video and a transcript of a few of the applicable comments for you.
(VIDEO AT LINK)
Schieffer: Would you favor a draft?
McChrystal: I personally believe that national service is important for the nation, and thats having all young people serve a term of national service. Certainly not all military. But I believe those things do have two effects. One, those things that bind people to their nation are important, and another thing is that were also a nation that doesnt get to know each other too well. Someone from one part of an inner city never meets another person from an upper class neighborhood. We need some things that pull people together in shared experience. We need to be ten years after the fact when they are meeting somewhere, Where did you serve? begins a connection that allows them to move on because we are getting too fragmented in my view...

There is perhaps a suspicion among leftist elites that the volunteer military is composed of the more TRADITIONALLY patriotic and that a diluting of the ranks with, ah, REGULAR Americans will leave the force more likely to follow orders that the more tratitionally patriotic may balk at.
First thing that popped into my mind, actually...
Obama has mentioned several times that he wanted a National Service.
Another view is that the all volunteer military, is destroying it, and ending the history of the traditional American fighting machine.
When you need 42 year old grandmothers and single moms to fill your ranks, then they will eventually shape it into their own image, and shape it to serve their needs and demands and wants, something that 200 years of man draftees couldn't do.
It only takes one draftie that doesn’t want to be there to eat up way too much of the CoC’s time that could be better spent elsewhere.
And the draft as an issue is what the left wants. They want the draft so they can relive the 60’s.
And why the Army lets in single moms is a PC issue. Single dads with custody are almost as bad - but also PC. Women being allowed in the Infantry will also be a PC issue.
I joined the Army in 74 and served with a number of folks who were drafted that had reenlisted. I have now problem with folks who are drafted.
I do take issue with the left because they want the draft for political reasons - not readiness.
For or Against the Iraq War it would have been very differnt if it was fought with a draftie Army with protests on all the college campuses.
The last draft ran continuously from 1940 through 1973 (except 1948), and WWII was almost all draftee in the army, and a large portion of the navy and marines.
This military is going down hill quickly because of the need to fill the ranks with females and moms and grandmothers, it is also growing too expensive.
I was in the Army before you, I would much prefer serving with a few draftees than what I started seeing in the 1980s, me and other older vets saw things that blew our minds.
We need more manpower, we have zero bench depth, these small military actions since 9/11 have pushed our tiny military to the limits and exhausted it, a major war will grind us down within weeks or months.
Stanley McChrystal is a servant of the Usurper. A gutless coward and a traitor to his country.
You keep mixing apples and oranges and trying to call it peaches.
The military of today is driven by PC civilians - which is why all the single moms you’re complaining about. Which is why the Infantry is about to be opened up to females.
Those issues have nothing to do with the draft and will not change if there is a draft.
The only thing that will change is there will now be folks in the Military who don’t want to be there.
You can’t keep the ranks filled without females today, the longer they are there, then the more the military will become about, and for, them.
You haven’t explained how to make up for the lack of men as a percentage, or the over all lack of manpower.
Personally, I would rather try to convert an 18 year old male into a warrior, than a female who enlisted for the daycare and benefits, and who never expected to have to fight.
Draftees volunteered for Jump School from it’s first creation in 1940, continuously through well past 1973, and we never even noticed the difference between them and RA, nor did we notice it in the Rangers, and the Special Forces, but women destroyed Jump School in no time.
Apples and oranges and you’re still getting peaches.
Have a nice day.
There are no apples, or peaches, or oranges in my posts.
The lack of a draft has nothing to do with the increasing amount of women in the military.
Bringing back the draft will not fix the problem of the increasing amount of women in the military.
Your lack of response to my comments on women being allowed to serve in the Infantry show you are not keeping up with what's going on now.
Live in the 60’s if you want to but the rest of the US is not going back there.
Not just “no” but “Hell No!”
No indentured servitude to this government. The fact that a communist punk like Obambi can be elected is enough to convince me that NOBODY should be forced to “serve” the government if they choose not to do so.
You keep posting personal nonsense about me and ignoring the facts of the discussion.
Living in the 60s is more your point of view, I am telling about a continuous draft from 1940 to 1973, something that you keep ignoring, the draft is normal, trying to maintain a global war fighting machine without it, isn’t.
While there has been long time pressure to bring women into the military, ending the draft helped that effort very much, and it absolutely drives the need for women today.
The military didn’t temporarily accept 42 year old women because the enlistment offices were being flooded with young men.
We have a shortage of men in the military, and we have a shortage of military men to fight a major war, and the people we do have, cost us too much, and that expense will continue to grow as women approach 50% and quality of life issues and pay, and benefits become the dominate factor of government service in the military.
Women are there to stay, the only thing that can dilute them and their negative effect, and reduce the pressure of them spreading into more jobs, is more men.
Again you get peaches.
Got back and live in your dream world.
Bringing back the draft would cause far more problems for the Military’s war fighting abilities than it would cure.
I'll vouch for that one. I used to work building maintenance is a large Nursing Home Retirement Community Complex. In the retirement community where there houses two men who both were retired 0-5 & 0-6 did just that very thing all the time. The guys working yard crew hated seeing them doing their weekly walk thru LOL.
Evidently you just don’t know much about this, you make hostile posts about fruit, over and over, without saying anything meaningful on the subject.
I’ve said the reason in a number of my posts.
You’re just to fixed on your agenda to read them and understand them.
Have a nice day Peaches.
Ok, well that was enlightening.
Very convincing.
Peaches
:-)
Yeah, you really sound like the kind of adult who someone should be listening to.
