You know, if Romney would talk about the skyrocketing price of groceries instead of just the price of gas, he would score a home run. My wife does most the grocery shopping and has sticker shock -every week portions get smaller and prices are higher.
My take on this is that we need to add a new phrase to the lexicon: "Obama-size It!" Definition: reduce product size by 1/3 and charge 1/3 more.
Anyone who shops to support a family know that our economy has been Obama-sized.
A pound of coffee is now 12 oz.
Half gallon of ice cream is offered on 1.5 and 1.75 qt. size.
Half gallon of apple juice is now 1.75 qt.
Thank God a dozen eggs is still a dozen, but I don’t expect that to last much longer.

I have 250 of 60w, 75w & 100w, plus spotlights/floods etc, all in incandescent bulbs. None of those CFLs for me.
I buy Dunkin’ Donuts or Eight ‘o Clock Whole Bean brands ($5.99-6.99/lb), grind it to Turkish consistency in-store, for fullest flavor, but don’t stock it in prep supplies. Once ground, unless refrigerated, it just goes stale. I can get along wo/ it in a SHTF. But I do the Whole Bean-Turkish grind for 1-2 lbs/ weekly, for ‘fridge/freezer storage. If you regrind pre-ground coffees to Turkish (expose more surface area to H2O), they taste much better, IMO.

Many cereals are coming in 15.2oz instead of 18oz boxes, at same price.
That’s a good idea - my drip coffee maker chokes on fine grind though.
For long term storage, canned coffee tastes about as good as it ever would, that is, not that great. To get around that, and for the fancy arabica stuff, stashed 30 or 40 pounds of green coffee, beans are easy to roast and the quality is excellent, and green coffee stores for many years.

I’m looking at a Keurig System...
...but price of entry is steep and per cup costs are 3-5x what I can do w/ Chemex. I can brew better coffee than Keurig or any other maker. Turkish grind is the key to flavor; drip is so much better. And it works in SHTF. Electric makers just become doorstops.
Just a couple years ago, my average ticket at the grocery store was around $100. Today, it’s consistently over $300. All the utilities went up in September. Property taxes jumped up again. ill see in a few days how much the income went down. Have only had one pot of green beans and not a single tomato from the garden in six weeks.
Don’t buy a Keurig, they are expensive. There are all kinds of one cup makers out there now. Saw one at Big Lots for $15 recently. And you don’t have to use their coffees. You can use a solocup or cafe cup and use any coffee you want in them.

Amen Puddleglum! I do the grocery shopping in our household, and I did a double-take just yesterday when picking up a few groceries. It gets worse every shopping trip I make.
It's obvious that over the past three or so years, so many products have been reduced in size, yet they now cost MUCH more, as you said.

FWIW and I have no investment or connection to the company but a company named Shady Brook Farms makes a delicious, low-fat turkey sausage that is very cost effective; 20 oz package for $3-$4.00. It’s probably not glatt kosher but there’s no pork in it nor any preservatives. Cooked in a red sauce and served over pasta it feeds 3-6.
It’s tough to find high quality, tasty protein for $3/lb
Thanks for the ping! I really think this is a winning issue - it is the elephant in the room of the US economy and if Romney would sympathize and promise to work to fix it, it would motivate the middle class in droves.
I’ve stopped shopping at regular grocery stores - can’t afford it.
There’s a bargain grocery in town and you would not believe all the “middle class” people that shop there (4 years ago they wouldn’t be caught dead in the place).....
The EBT’s (call them what they are, EBT’s)are shopping at the regular grocery stores, they don’t have to afford it.Some EBT’s do conserve their dollars and shop the bargain grocery stores - not many.
