Is it just me? I was watching the Olympics tonight in a restaurant. There was no sound. Gabby Douglas was receiving the Gold medal for her all-around performance in gymnastics. She did wonderful from what I saw.
BUT when she received the Gold, she did not put her hand over her heart when they played the National Anthem.
She was holding flowers in the middle of her body with her right hand and had her left hand behind her back.. I blew it off, kinda. But hubby saw it too and we both went into shock. I have never seen an Olympian not do this and I don't think I have ever seen someone not put their hand over their heart during the National Anthem.
Is it just me? Did anyone else see this and wonder the same thing? Has anybody mentioned it on the news? Should I give her a pass because of her age, nerves and the excitement of it all?
I hadn’t thought much about it, but you’re right. As long as a person is facing the flag, and not holding up a “black power” fist, they’re probably doin the right thing. :)
No the point is that Gabby’s remarkable effort, dedication and success have nothing to do with her color -— except to the liberal media and others of like mind.
A couple of years ago I saw a women’s basketball team receive gold medals (not olympic) and only ONE held their hand over their heart during the playing of the Anthem.
I told one of the staff about the protocols. But, basketball is rich with Obama fans; one even has an Obama doll on her desk. I don’t expect much in this matter.
Sometimes I put my hand over my heart, sometimes I stand with my hands behind my back, sometimes I get caught up gazing at the flag, remembering the sacrifices that were given for the flag while my hands just hang naturally.
Who cares? As long as people are respectful and not giving some political expression like the 68 morons or turning their back to the flag...it’s a non-issue.
This girl is 16 and is honoring her country with her athletic skill....Quit looking for the boogeyman where it doesn’t exist.
The glory goes up to Him, and the blessings fall down on me Gabby Douglas
It's a good thing that there are folks around like you to make sure that she never again forgets for a minute that she's not just Gabby Douglas, gold medalist, daughter, sister, person --- she's first and foremost Black.
I’m not putting the burden of Black America on this girl’s shoulders. She has used her individual drive and determination to become an American Champion. period!!! More power to her!!!
American Blacks have placed the burden of their day to day existance on their own shoulders, period!!! Tunnel vision and Black racism is a horrible way to go throught life with a self-inflicted mantra, administered by their own Black leaders, period. End of dialogue!!!
In the gym, there is no color. It is all about talent and work ethic. Gabby has both. And she has great faith instilled in her by her parents.
I notice the media is not asking her about her Christian faith. Just her dark skin.
I watched..thought she did..and she also spoke about the honor of representing our country..Can’t recall exact words..
I thought she was the best in all round...I loved all of the fab5.
I notice the media is not asking her about her Christian faith. Just her dark skin.

Te media and a few freepers.
You are right about effort, talent and hard work as defining characteristics. That's the way it should be.
Gabby is so talented and adorable, too.

Oh, now she's just "American" not "Black" first --- good for you.
Of course you ruined it with your follow-on rant about the troubles of Black America as if that has anything to do with her. It doesn't, except to certain types of people.
The glory goes up to Him, and the blessings fall down on me Gabby Douglas
Indeed she did say this..She makes a great champion.
Way to go Gabby!!!
Its only over the past 10-15 years that putting your hand over your heart during the anthem has become proper.
I’m wondering if Ronald Reagan got that started? Or maybe I’m thinking of him saluting the military?
I'm calling BS on that comment.
That’s what we were taught as kids, as well.
I’ve learned not to be so judgemental with the Soviet and Chinese gymnasts, etc. Who really knows what the differences in medals means when they go back home? I think a lot of their parents’ and their futures ride on the success that these girls have at the Olympics.
...and she is the child of a military person. She may have learned differently. Geez, some people get sticks up their butts over the slightest thing. She won the gold, be happy for her.
Yeah, it’s just you. The girl is just 16 and can barely focus her attention on the gymnastics because she’s so easily distracted. She’s on top of the world. Let her enjoy herself. BTW, her dad is in the Air Force and has only seen her perform at the trials. Her mom is divorcing him.
