Trouble, trouble at the Olympics
Jewish World Review ^ | July 27, 2012/ 8 Menachem-Av, 5772 | Wesley Pruden

Mitt Romney, the businessman with an eye for what's going wrong, can't resist the temptation to critique what he sees. A clich-monger would call him a "problem-solver." Others would call him a pain in the neck. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee arrived in London this week, took a quick look around and observed the obvious, that neither our English cousins nor the London Olympics appear to be quite ready for prime time. The man credited with saving the Salt Lake City winter Olympics called the well-known problems with security, traffic and a threatened strike by immigration officers "a bit disconcerting." The very word "disconcerting" is prim enough to suit the diplomats who know which finger to crook over a teacup, but not David Cameron, the prime minister who scolded Mr. Romney for his blunt language. Many of the thousands of reporters in town naturally called Mr. Romney's remarks a "gaffe," and suited up in their goggles and flying suits for duty in an open cockpit with the dreaded Gaffe Patrol. But a true gaffe is when a politician unexpectedly tells it like it really is. So this may be an authentic gaffe. The run-up to the London Olympics has been a cluster of migraines for nearly everyone. They're enough to make an Olympian forget where he put his shot.

Later on in the column, he points out how the IOC had not taken the 1936 Olympics away from Berlin, even after the Nuremberg laws had been enacted. What surprises me is that they have made have taken something created by the Nazis for the 1936 games and made it a symbol of the Games.

This is all overblown horseshit and will be forgotten the minute the Olympics end.

Of course, no one in MSM will readdress Obama’s return of the Churchill Bust, nor the chintzy DVD gift of his ‘speeches/whatever’ to the Queen. Idiots couldn’t even get the ITU zone right. Nor will they forget the hoopla and kabuki theater on Obama and Michelle’s attempts to bring the Olympics to the US.

This is “so-five-minutes-ago.”

You know most of the public is unaware that the IOC is a closely held corporation and the Olympics are their product. They’ve got a pretty good situation where they award the games, and then governments and taxpayers of the winning city foot the costs of the venues, security, transportation, etc. Sure, it provides exposure for the city and brings in a lot of people during the events, but the result is that the IOC has only minimal costs compared to the enormous outlays of the host city.

When I was in engineering and we designed a new product, we looked at everything that could possibly go wrong and then found a way to fix it. Something that doesn’t seem to happen today. I think this is where Romney is coming from. He’s being cautious. Nothing wrong with that.

or the minute something disconcerting happens...

funny thing is the media wants to get on Romney for giving an honest answer to a question...yet they fawn over obama who does nothing but blame everyone else...

i’m sure if Romney said, “its Bush’s fault” in response to the question people would be applauding him....

I agree with what has been said that this furor has been overblown and that frankly, he will be a better friend to Britain than Obama ever was.

Having said that, it was an error of judgement to publicly criticize London/Britain’s handling of the Olympics like this. If you believe a friend has done something wrong, you take them aside and tell them, you don’t openly and loudly humiliate them in front of others. At least, you shouldn’t.
Like I say, I suspect Romney does like and respect Britain a lot more than the Obamination, but he definitely cocked up by making that comment in public.

As far as I’m concerned he did nothing wrong. This hoopla about it is just diversionist BS.

So if Cameron publicly questioned and criticised American Olympic organisation IN the US whilst on a visit, thats ok?.

He is a guest. He should respect the host and keep his mouth shut.

This is only a problem for the British press and the left. I like a business like attitude that calls it the way he sees it. A little truth telling is a refreshing change from the Liar-in-Chief.

From the text.

.....suited up in their goggles and flying suits for duty in the dreaded Gaffe Patrol. But a true gaffe is when a politician unexpected tells it like it really is.

What we are really witnessing is the ultimate (almost) in thought control, thank you George Orwell for your 1984. The fine art in this obscene tactic is to frighten people. Make a mountain out of a molehill. Again and again it works. Consider the affair of the mere statement of support for traditional marriage by a business owner. The homosexual uses this tactic with devastating effect. Yet what really is wrong to say one believes in the biblical interpretation of One man, one woman and one God?.

There are no better exponents of this obscenity than that certain of the adherents to militant Islam. One should remember the furore over the ice cream inscription that was construed as arabic signs. The incident in Minnesota on the flight with clerics deliberately provoking concern.

Yes, it will all blow over. Already one athlete was denied entry to the Games for a chance remark construed as "racist". Imagine, after all the years of preparation what a cruel overkill!

Ok, excuse the rant. Having a wonderful time exploring genealogy of the Romney clan. Right from Dalton in Furness, Lancashire. I can only give a Shakespearian epithet to the politically correct, figuratively of course.

A pox on your throat.

I didn't see anything about this in the story. What do you mean?

The 1936 Games were the first ones that a torch was lit and the first ones that used the 5 ring symbol

Gov.Romney chose to go to the Olympics in London. That was fine, anyone can go. Like any individual, he is entitled to an opinion and can blurt-out anything, any opinion.

But, as Republican candidate Romney, he should have used discretion knowing anything he said would be picked-up by the press and distorted.

THAT is the problem.

Romney didn’t think before opening his pie-hole. Worst of all, he probably couldn’t help himself becasuse he is, at heart, a micro-manager.
