Vanity: Might get a job in Arkansas -- what's Arkansas like politically?
my greasy keyboard | 6/17/2012 | HTRN

I'm living in a suburb of Chicago, Ill-Noise right now, but might be getting a job offer from Rogers (Bentonville) Arkansas (yes it's associated with Wally World HQ but as a "permanent contractor" i.e. I'd be a perm employee of a contract house). After months with nothing this might be the second of two doors that are opening to me, the first in Madison, WI.

Well, from what little I can look up, Arkansas despite its redneck reputation is Democrat. Democrat Mike Beebe is the gov, versus the Republican Walker of Wisconsin. No idea what the AR legislature is like.

Would a conservative hi tech redneck have a hard time in Arkansas? I actually liked the idea of Arkansas a little better than Wisconsin for this originally Kentucky boy, but the Rats (and the fact that this place gave rise to the Clintoons) are a turn off.

Can you outvote the dead, the prisoners, and the Democrat pets?

My three Republican cats will help

Hi! Private message sent with my town.

I grew up around Oklahoma City and so I’m not that familiar with Tulsa, only that it has Oral Roberts University and a lot of churches. I need to finish my Masters degree but I haven’t really wanted to go to ORU.

I was just looking into Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest, NC but... the liberals in the area. Ouch!

There is an extension of Southern Baptist Seminary in Springdale, Arkansas that might be a possibility. Any advice on Springdale?

I’m also trying to start a business, so the business climate is a real factor, too.

I read the freep mail first. I live in Memphis. We have a great seminary here. Mid-America which is across the street from Bellvue Baptist.

This area of Memphis is very conservative. No state tax. Lots of churches and great people. Look into Mid-America as it is very conservative.

“Does Kentucky count as yankee?”

Maybe, depending on who you ask. Tennesseans might think a Kentuckian is a yankee. Texans might think that way about Oklahomans.

Well, Texans think *everyone* else is a yankee. :)

Thanks! I’ll look into it.

I highly agree with CC...I am a DC transplant to Memphis (well, over the border in MS - Olive Branch) and this area is heaven!

“This area of Memphis is very conservative. No state tax.”

I’ve been looking at Tennessee... love the No state tax part! I was thinking about Johnson City as it’s close to the mountains, but someone on another thread was just telling me that gays/liberals are really gaining in the area and that it could be moving in the direction of being another Asheville, NC.

Another thing about TN were some posts about police departments in the middle counties of the state confiscating cash from travelers who could not “prove” that their money wasn’t drug money. One poster said that I-75 from Chattanooga to Knoxville was nearly a “police state.” And there was another thread that said that Tennessee has made an arrangement with the TSA to let them randomly stop any vehicle for a search with no cause.

I was leaning toward Tennessee at the time, but reading some of those threads made me really start looking at Oklahoma again. As a Tennessean maybe you could give some thoughts about the state. On the Tennessee forum on http://www.city-data.com/forum/ people seem to really love your state!

“Oklahomans? Not Oklahomebodies?”

Oh, no no no! The proper term we use is “Okies.” Or we also go by “ya’ll”. :)

Phrases if you visit:
How ya’ll doin’
Jus’ fine! How’r you?

I'm actually a transplant from the L A area. The people are great, but weather is from Hades. I love it because my family is here and the small town atmosphere. Everyone is either related or knows someone that you know. I don't see that in Oklahoma. Good food here, but then there is Van's Pig Stand. I don't think until you actually live somewhere you really know whether it is right for you personally.

I’ve lived in Rogers 50 + years. I’ve traveled extensively and I found the Rogers area to have the highest quality of life I’ve ever encountered in the United States. Kind of libertarian politically; leave me alone and I’ll leave you alone. Random violence is non existent here.
If you come for a visit to this area-give me a call and we’ll get together.

Actually, Arkansas is where the toothbrush was invented.

We know this, because if it was invented anywhere else, it would be called a ‘teethbrush’.

A little advice from an ol’ Mississippi boy on moving down to God’s Country.

Things to bring with you when you move South:

1. A friendly attitude
2. A good smile

Things to leave behind:

1. All whiney-a**ed comments about, “well, up north we did it this way.” We don’t really care.
2. Any stupid ideas you might have about how you are going to change things for the “better”.

More advice can be found here:

http://wilk4.com/humor/humorm110.htm

Ya’ll have a good ‘en now.

My whole family is from that general area. And I am living just outside DC right now. Not by choice, mind you, but for work. I plan on moving back just as soon as I can retire.
